Broke so many axle shafts last year I finally upgraded to chromoly, but this weekend out, I broke all the locking hub to brake hub bolts. Lost all my damn cone washers too. I was told this was the next weak link in the system, And yes, they were tight.

I know Front Range Offroad sells ARP chromoly bolts for this application, But it seems like there was someone else that does too, anyone know of anymore options?

I'm not putting in the same stock bolts.....they were a PITA to get out once sheered off, and almost ruined my brake hub. The hardened dowel pins were even more of a PITA to get out, as they snapped off too.

Just remembered I had some extra cone washers!

That helps a lot, little suckers are expensive. Anyone know a good place to source the dowel pins? Of course when the studs broke, It wore into the dowel pin holes and elongated them, so I would really like to find some that are longer than stock. Any ideas? Had to run a bottom tap into the stud holes to fix the threads, so I'm good there.

Why do I always have to break the weird stuff? :meh:

Black what did you use to drill out the dowels in the hub? I've managed to shear 1 dowel in the front of my 80 and could use some advice on how to get the thing out.

This is a nice upgrade as well and much cheaper than ARPs.

OLD post, but I strongly disagree. It might hold a little more torque than stock, but it is bad idea. The whole point of the cone washers is to convert the shear stress into a tensile stress. Since just about any steel is roughly 57% weaker in shear than it in tensile changing the loading to pure shear gives up a whole bunch of strength. Not to mention that now you'll be like every other old school H$$per who can't keep the locking hub bolts tight no matter what you do or try.

I have used the factory studs every time except for once, when I won a set of the chromoly studs and put them on my FF rear hub during a re-build.

Guess which ones broke on me?:hhmm:

Years ago I read of an OZ who sourced 8mm studs and cone washers (from I don't know where) and installed those in his rear FF hubs because he kept breaking the OEM 6mm studs.

The 10x and later model 7x uses the larger stud assembly fwiw. We have sold hundreds of them as upgrades for older setups.

This is exactly why we keep people like Kurt around. Thanks for lurking our little corner.
