Howdy, I’m new here. Bought a fj40 and I’m looking to fix her up.

Though putting aluminum checker plate on a steel body may look good the downside is electrolysis !
And nothing says 'this rust was so bad that I couldn't fix it' quite as well as diamond plate.

Better shoot us some pics of your drive shafts looks like you might have a CV joint and if so your driveshaft may be on backwards I got checkerplate on mine. I just coated the back of it with rockergaurd. Haven’t removed them in 20,years so no idea if it rusted. I put them on over new quarter panels. Lol I thought it looked good. Haha get out and drive that thing

I use the stk gauge cluster with one of my sbc 40's. I just use use stk Toyota senders. I run a gm alt with an idiot light. I bypassed the ammeter. You'll need an adapter for temp sender. I bought it from Toyota. I also run rams horns, one Cruiser uses the Wagner the Y pipe then single exhaust and exits on the drivers side. The other 40 runs an exhaust shop made up Y pipe and routed the single exhaust like it was stk with 6 and exits on the pass side. The po had it done. I'll likely change it to exit out the drivers side and be less restrictive. I think I'll buy kit of bends and straight pipes and make my own.
I’m guessing all the stock senders were all ripped out by the po. I’d like to get a new wiring harness and put some original gauges in it. I just a kit for the exhaust, what kind of mufflers/cans are you using? Mine is LOUD how it is now

I've always loved Triumphs and MGs: iconic. But I'm 6'6" and the only British sports car I've ever been able to drive comfortably was a Jenson Interceptor my mate Phil had in Australia. That was a fun car.

Stock and aftermarket senders are available. You can probably find a stk gauge cluster in the classified section if you need one. You need to find a FSM and wiring diagram. Coolerman sells color correct wire and plugs and has diagrams on his site. The senders need to match the vintage of the cluster. I think there are 2 versions, you want the later one. Wiring harnesses are a lot more difficult to find. I think my 40 with the Y pipe has an aftermarket flow master 50 on it. It has a nice rumble. The other 40 runs a stock style exhaust and is more restrictive and is real quite. It exits out the pass side with the muffler going across the rear.

Also give a look at the Dakota Digital guage cluster. I'm a big fan. It would solve all your issues at once, it's easy to install AND it is very well suited to a V8 swap.

Here’s a couple of exhaust runs. 2 into one with the right bank crossing in front of the oil pan on mine. Flowmaster 5117? on the first pic (mine) and not sure on the second which was done by @reddingcruiser I think. I copied him on a lot of my truck. My exhaust guy ran 3” pipe from the collector back which I wouldn’t do again. Takes up too much real estate.

Dakota Digital is the EASY button with V8s.

I had to change to a Hummer oil pan for driveshaft clearance and even with the pipe crossing in front of the sump by about 2” it was easy by disconnecting at each header and the mid-mount hanger.

Correctomundo, the drivesh
Budbuilt makes heavy duty 1/4 panels. I think they offer custom options also.

I run the Wagner y pipe on one of my 40's. It's quick and easy. You'll need to get the heat riser spacer for the passenger side for it to work properly. It tucks nicely under the engine. There's someone on the internet that sells a spacer blank without a flapper in it. The single exhaust is a little restrictive but works and sounds good. It can be run so it's up out of the way. Mine exits out the drivers side. My other 40 has a y pipe made by a muffler shop and is not a nice. I think I'm going to eventually get a pipe bend kit and make my own exhaust system. I'm also considering getting the 2 1/2" dump ramshorns that were on early Vettes.
i just looked up budbuilt, thank you. That’s exactly what i need 👍

I got everything to do a dual exhaust but I kinda want to go single and keep it a bit quieter.

What’s a flapper by the way?

I’d love a Dakota digital but it’s a bit spendy. I need to allocate my shillings to getting it driving better for now but I’ll probably do that in the end👌

Easy button, I love the sound of that. Exhaust wise this is probably what I’m going to do, thanks for the photos!

Hummer oil pans fit on small blocks?

Anyone have some old beat up dash pads I could buy/have? I do upholstery so it wouldn’t be hard to recover them if they are beat up. But I’d buy some in good condition if the price is right also

I think he was referring to an LS engine when he mentioned the hummer pan.

When I had a SBC, I used the walker y pipe. Fit well with the spacer @pb4ugo mentioned.

Its actually a heat riser. The was a dampener in the spacer that was controlled by heat sensitive spring. The dampener would close to build heat to preheat the air going to the carb when it is cold. There's a company that specializes in vettes that sells the spacer without the dampener.

So Ramshorns have a dampener on them? I’m confused. I thought it just went header-to gasket-to the exhaust 💨 I’ve seen the spacer but my exhaust just goes from horns to pipe

So the heat riser/spacer just drop the y pipe lower. This something that comes on stock sbc v8s or something ?
