Hey guys, ontop of other issues, of course, my stock springs are dead. Which should I look at doing? Zuk mod or stock springs? I am on a budget and for now it is my dd and not a huge trail rig, although I would like to hit the hills a little and would use this as a hunting rig. Also, should I look at Ball Joint Spacers to keep it leveled? or would I really need that with just the Zuk or stock springs replacement?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

MAYBE an inch or 2 from the Bump Stops.

dude i have no idea what a zuk mod is?

i would get an add a leaf, as crushed as those are i do not think it would raise the rear any higher than stock.

and then i would go to advance or auto zone and buy the spring helpers.

but only for a temp fix while i look into the lifts for ifs!

Swap out some pickup springs that are in better shape. Add a leaf to the pickup pack if needed to compensate for extra weight. Should be about 30-40 bucks at a u-pull or maybe cheaper from car-part.com yards.

yep, just replace any crakced leafs and maybee through some extra in the pack.
Dont forget when you rebuild the pack to sand blast or wire wheel all the leafs clean and repaint them with some sort of graphite lube.

Do some longer shackles in the rear and through some BJ spacers upfront your ready to go.

Here is what a ZUK mod is.

are your springs okay enough to merit getting recurved at a suspension shop? It'll be the cheapest solution.

Just adds some leaves from some junkyard stock leaf packs and be done with it... One or two long thin leaves sould work it right out. I did it on my '80 to get a small amount of lift and it works and rides great. If you want to get fancy you can ditch the overload for some thinner leaves cut to fit and add the top half leaf from the perch forward to eliminate axle wrap. Check out the pic:

So, H8PVMNT, you bought stock spring packs from a junk yard and split them up and added a couple to your leafs?

IIRC, he made his own leaf packs, he told me about it a few months back.
Was there a link? I don't remember.

Well I had the extra springs sitting here anyway but yes, that's the idea. I'll try to find the thread. It's really easy though and the results are great for almost no $. You can do alot of tuning to leaf springs if you try. THis makes much better results than a standard add a leaf since you can use nice thin stock leaves that won't make it ride bad.

You need a set of extra leaf springs, some c-clamps and a chop saw.

look i have a geto set up on my leafs, to level my truck because one side collapsed bad,

and any one who thinks that doing a zuk is going to give you a better ride, you need to think this through, you are still riding on leafs, the zuk is nothing more than a helper spring!

and if you are going to this at least get springs that will go over the piece on your frame, that s*** that was pictured in the link is dangerous that spring can and will come out when put under enough pressure, and a spring under preasure leaving its mounts is deadly!

Correct, a coil helper.

Zuk is local, so some local rigs have this setup, have only wheeled with one and it worked well. The rig had add-a-leafs (helper springs), removed them and went with the coils, reports that it rides, flexes much better, very happy. I have never heard of one coming out. Not a big fan, but, it is a cheap, easy, effective mod, so has it's place?

If you go to the home page, at the bottom is links to others who have done this mod.

not that it does not work i would rather the springs go over than to cut the bottom off, and stuff the spring inside but i guess you could fab it so it goes all the way around the spring.

i guess after seeing a coil shoot across a shop and total a metal roll up door, just makes me think more on it.

x2 - I think I would at least weld some type of post inside of the upper bracket so that the spring could not slip out. That metal will eventually have enough stress on it to open up and let go of the coil. Removing the center affected the strength of the sides. Placing gussets on both sides may also help!
