Just discovered that REI is a major backer to the Sierra club and will NOT support OHV recreation.
That's a drag to hear!!

Anyone else know this??

Yep and Bank of America is anti-gun. And the list goes on...

Having said that I've been a member of REI since 1974 although I don't spend more than a hundred bucks a year there anymore.

I googled, and there was a list of companies that a LOT of wheelers use.
Northface, kelty, keen, just to name a few!
Also posted a comment about it on FB and come to find out that fat tire and Sierra Nevada breweries also financially support Sierra club!?
I just had no idea that their arms stretched so deep that they had major corporations backing them!!
In lieu of sending my membership dollars to TLCA, I may use that money and get my membership to cal 4 wheelers and BRC, organizations that actually DO SOMETHING for our recreation.
This kinda opened my eyes a bit!!

The pro wilderness/pro protection legions have been very effective at lobbying for their interests for decades. For the life of me, since getting back into 4'wheeling in 2005, I can not figure out why the general off-road crowd...especially 4x4 wheelers...are so damn complacent.

And then we wonder as we look around, especially right now today, at our diminishing resources/public access and how it all seemingly happened overnight!

I respect the Sierra Club, The John Muir Society, SUWA, REI and all the similar causes like them! Want to know why?! Because they rallied. They got their butts out of the bleachers and actually rallied around something they believed in. We just keep drinking more beer. Another famous quote: "We have met the enemy: ITS US"!

Per the Blue Ribbon Coalition: There are 50-million OHV and off-road enthusiasts in this country. If each of us just gave $2 to the Blue Ribbon Coalition each year and maybe a couple bucks each to another local cause along with taking 30-seconds now and then to e-mail our representatives just think what "we" could do! For less than the cost of one mochafreakinglatte!

As the old saying goes..."you wanna play then you gotta pay". "We're" starting to get it...I'm just flabbergasted why it has taken so long to even get this amount of funding to BRC, etc.

Wake up guys and gals!!!

BTW: I am a life member of the BRC...

That's a good point dan and I'm guilty of it!!
However, I'm IN from this point on.
The other side of this though is I wanna do MORE than just donate money.
As you pointed out, there is a LOT of talk, but no action. The thing for me is, there's no guidance on what to do PROACTIVELY!!
where do we begin to take action individually!!
If I'm not mistaken, these are OUR LANDS too!! We do PAY FOR THEM!! it's killing me that a single special interest group can get their agenda pushed through with seemingly very little effort!!

Yeah!! I'm FIRED UP!! I couldn't sleep last night because of it.

IMO the Blue Ribbon Coalition is doing a better job representing our interests AND working with the legislative process at the state and federal levels than any other group I am familiar with (at least for off-road access ;)). That's not to say there aren't concise and effective efforts being conducted on behalf of motorized public lands access by other groups but the BRC has grown to become the equivalent (not in funding...but in stature) of the NRA in the gun world...they just need more ammo and NOW!

It was our Explore Nevada 2010 trip with Jack, Darcie my friend Gary Fuller and myself to the greater Jarbidge area that left an indelible mark upon me with respect to the positive change that can occur if we just rally to the cause. The epic tale from over a decade ago about the "Shovel Brigade" should be our rallying cry!

A 10-minute video about it here: Jarbidge Shovel Brigade (part 1) - YouTube

Back to the BRC: I am able, depending upon the filters I select, to be in a near constant state of update and awareness through my membership in the BRC whether it be on a state, regional or national level. Its up to me, though, to read the e-mails. And I get a regular publication from the BRC in the mail too.

Like anything community based it also takes more than money to get things accomplished and off-road access/awareness is no different. That is why its not only prudent to increase our awareness but also become a little more active...after your hard earned dollars are sent to these various organizations...by communicating our desires, interests and value for motorized public access.

So by simply taking a minute or two once or twice a month and writing effective (Key word: "effective") e-mails to our representatives this will go a long way for our cause. I am in regular contact with our representatives. Believe it or not they DO listen to their constituents. They might not always vote the way I want them to but they do listen based upon my experience anyway...

And fighting for something we value is the same as anything else: If a relatively small vocal portion of our population are the ones our representatives are hearing from its not nearly as effective as a large group of vocal constituents. Majority wins!

But at the end of the day we just have to get engaged with this process with the hope we can bring about the change we want. I do know this: I am fully aware of what we WON"T be doing in regard to our off-road hobbies if WE DO NOTHING!

Unfortunately it seems to have taken trail closures in our local front and back yards before we became more aware! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Sorry for the soap box rant...

You're absolutely right!!
I have no idea as to how to contact our representatives, and I may contact you when I get home from Chicago to pick your brain more on this.
It wasnt so much the closures here as much as it was the realization of how HUGE the entity we are fighting against!!
For some reason I thought they were a smaller organization, but then to find out all the corporate backing they have... WOW!!

Hey I am in. I'm a lifetime member of BRC. But that doesn't seem like enough.

I would like to know all corporations that donate to the Sierra Club and other road closure groups/judges/lawyers/goverment agencies. Can BRC help us? We should start a boycott of all companies that support them.

We love the outdoors more than they do. They try to paint us as tree haters etc. These are public lands/our lands that they try to deny access to. We should start by posting on forums etc.

throwing rocks in the pond, anyone have a list of Serria club doner's, we could put a real dent into there funding with a few well placed letters.. explaining exactly what they do and their activities. Most business's donate because it makes them look better. If the perception what they are donating to is negative then they dont donate.. I agree the BRC is a great orginization. If we started this on Priate and reno 4x4 there are enough members just on Pirate to start a stink....

REI is for people who can't afford gas....................:flipoff2:

I'll paste up the list I found later this eve of the other contributors to the Sierra club!
You never hear about "rallies" or awareness on this by 4 wheelers?
Donno if it would make a difference or not, but why not organize something up at deer valley in efforts to protest the closure and promote awareness? Not that we just go barreling down the trail, but just a place to get everyone together and promote a plan to band together?
Just the inception of an idea... It would obviously need honing.
Espresso hit it right... Everyones just been sitting by and hoping someone steps in!!! That includes ALL OF US HERE!!
yeah... I get supporting the orgs like BRC and cal4wheelers, bu there's gotta be a proactive method to employ beyond that.

Im gonna look into this a bit more.
I have NO IDEA what to do, but I feel like I wanna do SOMETHING!!

You must not have shopped there, they are very proud of their stuff.

I couldn't afford to buy from them if I wanted to.

Not to change the subject cause I think this is the right track we are all thinking. BUT...

FOF is having a work party Fordyce the 26th. They are checking on the trail to see what needs to be done for the coming year.
These guys are pretty cool :banana:as I found out on the w. party that got canceled in Oct. due to snow last year. They are mostly buggy guys that love this trail. We talked for awhile then I took off cause they were going to run some of the trail. Hard for me to believe they were going to do it cause I almost got stuck just getting out of the campground.

Anyway I think I might do this. Anyone else up for it? I will probably only go halfway and then out again. Maybe just to winch hill 1 and then lunch and then out. Guess it depends on time. I hate wheelin over obsticals with snow on them. this would be a good way to warm up for the full run in July!(or August?)

So whos in?:hhmm:

Kieth I like your idea of a protest! OCCUPY DEER VALLEY!! :D:D
