Just discovered that REI is a major backer to the Sierra club and will NOT support OHV recreation.
That's a drag to hear!!
Anyone else know this??

spressomon said:The pro wilderness/pro protection legions have been very effective at lobbying for their interests for decades. For the life of me, since getting back into 4'wheeling in 2005, I can not figure out why the general off-road crowd...especially 4x4 wheelers...are so damn complacent.
And then we wonder as we look around, especially right now today, at our diminishing resources/public access and how it all seemingly happened overnight!
I respect the Sierra Club, The John Muir Society, SUWA, REI and all the similar causes like them! Want to know why?! Because they rallied. They got their butts out of the bleachers and actually rallied around something they believed in. We just keep drinking more beer. Another famous quote: "We have met the enemy: ITS US"!
Per the Blue Ribbon Coalition: There are 50-million OHV and off-road enthusiasts in this country. If each of us just gave $2 to the Blue Ribbon Coalition each year and maybe a couple bucks each to another local cause along with taking 30-seconds now and then to e-mail our representatives just think what "we" could do! For less than the cost of one mochafreakinglatte!
As the old saying goes..."you wanna play then you gotta pay". "We're" starting to get it...I'm just flabbergasted why it has taken so long to even get this amount of funding to BRC, etc.
Wake up guys and gals!!!
BTW: I am a life member of the BRC...
spressomon said:IMO the Blue Ribbon Coalition is doing a better job representing our interests AND working with the legislative process at the state and federal levels than any other group I am familiar with (at least for off-road access). That's not to say there aren't concise and effective efforts being conducted on behalf of motorized public lands access by other groups but the BRC has grown to become the equivalent (not in funding...but in stature) of the NRA in the gun world...they just need more ammo and NOW!
It was our Explore Nevada 2010 trip with Jack, Darcie my friend Gary Fuller and myself to the greater Jarbidge area that left an indelible mark upon me with respect to the positive change that can occur if we just rally to the cause. The epic tale from over a decade ago about the "Shovel Brigade" should be our rallying cry!
A 10-minute video about it here: Jarbidge Shovel Brigade (part 1) - YouTube
Back to the BRC: I am able, depending upon the filters I select, to be in a near constant state of update and awareness through my membership in the BRC whether it be on a state, regional or national level. Its up to me, though, to read the e-mails. And I get a regular publication from the BRC in the mail too.
Like anything community based it also takes more than money to get things accomplished and off-road access/awareness is no different. That is why its not only prudent to increase our awareness but also become a little more active...after your hard earned dollars are sent to these various organizations...by communicating our desires, interests and value for motorized public access.
So by simply taking a minute or two once or twice a month and writing effective (Key word: "effective") e-mails to our representatives this will go a long way for our cause. I am in regular contact with our representatives. Believe it or not they DO listen to their constituents. They might not always vote the way I want them to but they do listen based upon my experience anyway...
And fighting for something we value is the same as anything else: If a relatively small vocal portion of our population are the ones our representatives are hearing from its not nearly as effective as a large group of vocal constituents. Majority wins!
But at the end of the day we just have to get engaged with this process with the hope we can bring about the change we want. I do know this: I am fully aware of what we WON"T be doing in regard to our off-road hobbies if WE DO NOTHING!
Unfortunately it seems to have taken trail closures in our local front and back yards before we became more aware! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Sorry for the soap box rant...
Dan

You must not have shopped there, they are very proud of their stuff.REI is for people who can't afford gas....................![]()
as I found out on the w. party that got canceled in Oct. due to snow last year. They are mostly buggy guys that love this trail. We talked for awhile then I took off cause they were going to run some of the trail. Hard for me to believe they were going to do it cause I almost got stuck just getting out of the campground.

FOF is having a work party Fordyce the 26th. They are checking on the trail to see what needs to be done for the coming year.

Anyway I think I might do this. Anyone else up for it? I will probably only go halfway and then out again. Maybe just to winch hill 1 and then lunch and then out. Guess it depends on time. I hate wheelin over obsticals with snow on them. this would be a good way to warm up for the full run in July!(or August?)
So whos in?
