I've been dreading repairing the rust in my roof since I purchased the vehicle, I've been able to repair rust everywhere else by cutting and welding, but with the roof you have the lining to content with, catching fire etc. etc. to bloody hard to remove :bang:

So I was searching the net today and found this video on glass fibre filler, which is thicker than normal filler and it's specifically for repairing rust holes in vehicles.

Have a look and let me know your thoughts

http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/how-to/Paint-Panel/Rust-Repair.aspx?id=125

So I also purchased a tin of the filler on eBay for $17 for 500 grams, so hopefully I'll be able to repair those rust holes in the roof

Thanks

I've asked for your thoughts, but I forgot to include my rust, so here's the 6 spots in the roof I'm talking about

The rust in the first picture looks like the biggest issue to deal with.A real hole i presume?.Can you poke through it?
The other spots look like surface rust but nevertheless, nothing you want to leave untouched. It will catch up with you in the near future.
XXXX!!!!! the never ending rust battle....

Hey Sved

Yep that first one is the one I was dreading :bang:, however this filler is recommended for holes upto 50mm, not that I'll be even close to that:cheers:

Funnily enough I've walked past that rust 100 times doing other things and it never looked that big as in the photo:doh:

THATS WHAT SHE SAID!

Seriously mate grab the grinder and a wire brush attachment and find out where it ends. Fill, prime, spray, done.....until full respray time.
I can't believe the work you've put into this rig!

THATS WHAT SHE SAID!

HaHa!

I've ordered the filler express post, so I'll be right onto it

Thanks again for the support mate, I've been working on it flat out for 2 weeks, but back to work on Tuesday, so it will slow down now

I've cut and replaced rust out of the roof of my truck in many of the same places as yours. The roof is two sheet metal panels with airspace between (thus the rust)- if you are even moderately careful you will not burn the car down or scorch the headliner. The interior sheet metal panel is rarely rusted through like the exterior in my experience- over a 55 & two 60's. I'd cut it out and then oil with ATF- it wicks into incredibly tight spaces- between two pieces of sheet metal pressed together even. Good luck!

Hey mate

Thanks very much for the advice, much appreciated, I've been looking a few write ups and that's exactly what I was thinking but wasn't 100% sure. When I sand back I'll have a good look in there and decide whether or not to weld depending on the size of the hole.

Thanks again

Spudman

What I hate the most about opening my bonnet on my 60 is having to hold up the weight of the bonnet and then stick the stupid PIA bonnet stay in the right hole :bang:

Well no more as of today,

Firstly I removed the brackets

Then I used a grinder and ground off the rivets on the bracket that attaches to the bonnet and then bolt the bracket back on

I then used this small hole to mount the other end

And then lock your struts into place

I purchased the struts on eBay for $20, they are 410mm

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111244174558?

I can't believe how easy they were to fit

So this afternoon I decided to remove the front grill and headlight surrounds, I am going to spray them with satin black

So I'll leave them overnight to dry, but early indications is they are going to look very nice :grinpimp:

Sweet mod mate, looks like a nice easy one.
I can't believe they sell them on eBay as 60 series even though it was never standard.

You're not wrong mate, I was about to contact him this morning and let him have it, then I thought nah I can make this work :)

Anyway I still wrote to him and told him that 60's never came out with them, he was actually very appreciative and had no idea, so there you go. I also told him to visit mud and have a look at the installation

Could it be that they also fit the upper hatch?;)
Then they would be ''standard'' 60 series struts.:p

Greetings

^^^ Yeah lots of guys use the same ones for the upper hatch. Only difference is that those that do this mod usually go for a higher weight rating (hatch is 90lbs I believe and most use 120lbs for the hood/bonnet).

Yeah I'm not sure if they're the same as the rear Sved, I came upon them during my usual searching of eBay and thought they must have been available somewhere other than Australia, Sweden perhaps :)

It doesn't say anywhere on the listed item that it suits either front or rear

Looking forward to getting back into it tomorrow :bounce:

While I was doing the hub seals, I looked at the old brake lines and they had a few cracks in the rubber, so I ordered to new front ones and an extended rear brake line, so I'll fitting those tomorrow :D

Also I hope to make a start on the roof as my glass filler arrived today as well

Regards

So today I finished spraying my grill in black and I thought I'd try something different with the Toyota Badge

So here it is, let me know what you think

I think it looks awesome :bounce::bounce2:

So after fitting the grill, it was straight onto the roof, I sanded it back with an orbital sander, the PO had obviously used a bit of silastic in the holes

So no real surprises there, so I mixed up the glass filler and it went on so easy over the holes, good quality stuff :grinpimp:

Waited about half an hour and then sanded it back

So it came up very nice, I've just mixed up the normal filler and applied that, so I'll give it a bit of time to try and then sand back and paint

And the final job for the day, in between waiting for filler to dry etc. was to make a start on flares

4704fa20bee15d1a9bebdc00286db006_zps0c5795b6.jpg

ATM a couple of them are very orange peel looking and a few stone chips, so just started rubbing them back and then I'll be painting them with satin black

I've also got to make a start on painting my alloy bull bar, which will also be satin black and as it's an all in one with the scrub bars and side steps I gotta get it finished before I put the front wheels on.

I was only thinking about having a go at my flares today!

I was going to re gel coat or 2 pack them and then I was tossing up the idea of painting them in a matte finish or plasti dip.

I'm looking forward to seeing it all bolt up spud!
