So after way too many hours on the grinder with wire wheels, strip disc’s and air tools l finally cleaned it down and hit it with rust converter. Had a nice sliver of steel in the thumb, l don’t know why l do these things sometimes😂
Burnt out my Makita grinder in the process using the wire wheel.
Maybe someone else sandblasting and painting is the go😔
The hard work will be worth the effort when done

Mechanic gloves have saved me a lot of pain. I buy the harbor china one for cheap $7. I take ShoeGoo and coat the finger tips when they are new - makes them last several times longer. Wire wheels - super glue the wires at the hub several time before you use them - makes them last longer and helps with shedding high speed wires. Safety glasses at min, I use a full face hood and a neck scarf.

Some good tips there @charliemeyer007. I was wearing some lighter gloves when l got that splinter, went straight through. I went and got some heavy gauge mechanix gloves after that. Had wire stuck in my face using wire wheels before so try to always wear safety gear, worked many years with a one eye mate.

Poly U400 black on the chassis👍
Noticed the rear sway bar is at a bad angle and has some worn bushings.
Put that on the to do list, also want some new shocks. remember reading about rear shocks in front and longer 75 series for the rear, something along those lines anyway.

Still playing around with the tray and body heights are a bit off. Not too sure where it is exactly but check all mounts and there is some wear but maybe that’s how they are🤷🏻‍♂️ Making my OCD get triggered😂
Anyway finished painting my rear bar for the 80 series and wanted to touch up some spots on the bullbar l had been working on a while back for the HJ47.

Looking to put the spare up against the headboard rather than underneath the rear.
Also replaced the drivers side door seal as the old one was buggered and the door rattled like a bitch. Had some new door seals from cityracer but decided to use some old Hilux door seals l had instead as the door will eventually need some rust work and will be stripped down so until then these seals will do.
So much nicer with a new door seal and some softer suspension, thinking l might need to add a leaf to the front pack for some height. Not sold on the extended shackles so will just get some standard greaseable ones and see how they go.
Also need to decide on what to do for painting the headboard, rear panel infill to come.

My brother came for a visit this weekend, it’s been a long time since we caught up. Brought a heap of parts for the Beast aka FJ45 ‘77 model, has a fair bit of rust but the plan was to change points and condenser, plugs and leads and get it running. Had another carby but it doesn’t have the return fuel line on the carb plumbed in. Anyone know if this will cause an issue?
Sorted a few wiring issues and got it cranking, got spark but couldn’t get it too run. Checked valves were opening and closing, previously checked compression which showed slightly low in one cylinder but still ok. Considering checking the valve clearances🤔
Fitted the new China built carb and couldn’t get fuel in so pulled the top and found the needle and seat must have been stuck. Still couldn’t get it to run and the starter was slowly dieing😬
Moved on to the brakes and did all the front and rear wheel cylinders, still need some flexible hoses and make a few hard lines to finish but a busy few days.

Spent some more time on the old Beast. Fitted another starter motor. Still couldn’t get the new carb to take fuel in the bowl. Stripped and cleaned up the old original carb and fitted a secondhand top gasket and another accelerator pump plunger. Fitted the carb and got level in the bowl. Rechecked points gap and adjusted the valve set. Found that if you hold the ignition key all the way on it won’t get spark so had to let the key come back slightly, assuming the ignition is worn. Then finally the old 2F fired into life. Good to get another 2F back alive, love these old girls🍻
Merry Christmas

Got back onto the HJ47 after getting sidetracked, bought some steel sheet and finished off the headboard. Still needs painting.
Took the old girl for a good run to meet another landcruiser enthusiast who is building a BJ73 with a 15BFTE and 10 speed auto. This thing is going to be a beast. During that run up the highway l realised the engine is definitely lacking power and think a turbo will be in its future. Too many other things to do at the moment thou.
Mounted my Narva rear Led taillights that have been patiently waiting, had to modify the factory brackets. Then the flasher didn’t like the new LEDs. Found a thread on modifying a Toyota factory unit by removing a resistor and boom, worked a treat.

Always wanted to adjust the fuel screw to see if l could get the old girl moving a bit quicker. Anyway after catching up with a mate who builds 60 series cruisers up he mentioned he just bought a HJ60 and it flies. I called lies but decided to adjust my fuel to see what happens. Made a crude tool to loosen the lock nut and gave it half a turn. Made a huge difference and only slight black smoke on full revs. Probably should have a pyro to check but what the hell, gets along quite well now.

Finally organised my brother to come over and finish off the FJ45 aka The Beast.
Got the clutch hydraulics done, brake hard lines made and fitted the last of the flex brake hoses he got. Fired her up and the clutch works and the gearbox shifts quite nice. Fitted the fuel tank and some new fuel hoses back to the cab. Motor runs sweet considering it’s been sitting for years in a property out west and so another 40 lives again👌
Think he’s selling this one and looking to start the motor swap on his 2H troopy.
