Looking into options for new side mirrors, my drivers one is alright but passenger needs replacing. Factory mirrors don’t seem great for the price and European style ones are expensive if you can get them.
Found a picture of some defender mirrors and don’t kind the look. Spoke to the owner and he rates them. Thinking of making an adapter to mount them to the factory holes into doors.

Cleaned up my old 80 series brake booster l was saving for my other build and gave it some fresh paint. Looking at installing it on the HJ47 as l have read it’s a great upgrade to the braking system. You a need a spacer for it to work which l have a 19mm spacer in my parts and a thicker one from an early Hilux as well. Also need to clearance the rib on the firewall for it to fit, it installs upside down from the 80 series. Going to cut the thicker one down and getting another booster 2nd hand geniune item. Looks like a lot of cheap eBay ones for sale but the quality is unknown. Did look around for a geniune or seiko brand but nothing for a reasonable price, all up around $700-$800.

Some minor clearancing on my spare cab to fit the larger 80 series booster

Decided to swap the 80 booster into the HJ47, trimmed the rib to clearance and test fit. May have been better to take more off but it fits and is painted to stop any rust. Pedal seemed way too soft and pulls up hard when brake is pressed. So decided to check the booster rod to master clearance and of course it was out by a lot🙄
Was in a hurry to fit it all up up late in the afternoon and missed that bit. So after a few measurements l tried to turn the shaft and adjustment but it was bloody tight, got it eventually but may have put a mark on the shaft. Hopefully this will clean up but l did notice that compared to my other 80 booster the shaft sticks out not as far? Not sure if this is a year model difference thing or not. Might just clean up the shaft and adjust to suit the master and see if it’s ok🤷🏻‍♂️

Got the best of me and removed the booster and gave it a shake, something was loose inside. Pulled the vacuum valve and could see a rubber disc, thinking that’s the reaction disc that should be behind the pushrod. After some careful manoeuvring the disc was back in place and now the shaft sits at the correct height. Warning if your going to clean up and paint your booster be careful not to let this fall out from behind the rod. Glad l took it off now👍

My seats are in reasonable condition but the vinyl is cracking up, decided to try the 79 series landcruiser canvas covers from Toyota. Saw that someone used them but couldn’t get confirmation or pictures that they fitted, so for half the price compared to Black duck l took a chance. Fit is pretty good and the price was right, drivers back rest is a little narrower than the 40 and the bench was a tight fit but look the part.

The weather this year has been the worst l can remember. None stop rain this month so been cleaning up the workshop and moving my spare HJ47 cab onto its new home😉 80 chassis.
Also looking at some options for fuseable links as mine were missing, maybe going to midi fuses instead. Also started to making a new intake tube for the snorkel feed in as the safari set up isn’t very good. Started with a 3” tube and shaped to suit the airbox side. Will loose a bit of the rear mounting bracket but will deal with that as l go.

Decided to finish off the snorkel intake into the airbox. Welded and blended in the new intake tube, had to cut off the rear mount and refit a trimmed up version as this was the best place to join to the snorkel inlet. Found a spare 3” hose and a blank to block the original pick up. Ran out of black paint but it will do for now, also noticed the inner plastic cover that goes over the air filter seems a bit restrictive? I know this is good for dust but thinking it may stop some air flow to the powerful 2H😂
People with a 2H do you still have this filter cover, you can see where the rats had a good chew on mine.

Always on the look out for more 40 series parts and see a local fella giving away a rear diff housing with the 4 bolt pattern with axles and what looks like a pto winch. So go to collect and spend an hour or so looking at his HJ47, BJ42 and find out he has an 64 original soft top🤤
A couple of nice rigs right there, ended up with the rear housing and an electric Thomas winch which looks like a pto one, set of Terrain Tamer springs in good condition for my HJ47 and an old drivers door to cut down for $200. This old Thomas winch is a real beast of a thing with a big gear set in it, bloody heavy duty. From what l have researched they seem like a good thing and he told me that it did work and originally came off his HJ47. I’ll test it out and if it works l might give it a birthday and some new rope.
He replaced his springs for parabolics but tells me the terrain tamer springs were a good ride which my old ute desperately needs. Fitted the rear springs and lost about 40mm in height but it has a better rear shackle angle now. A couple pics of the winch sitting on my 80 chassis build.

Still looking at better options for the mirrors as the originals are worn and move out of adjustment easily.
Also want to build a new headboard for the tray, found a design l like. Want to keep the original tray and maybe build a dog box and throw on some sides.
Got some 75x50x2.5mm steel to build the following, already had some steel but it’s 3mm, probably way overkill but it’s what l had.
Below is the tray l’m going to copy, I’ll reuse some round bars from the old tray.

Spent some more time today welding in the headboard, happy with the way it’s turning out. It’s definitely solid once all welded, think l might go a bit lighter on the sheet for the wall on the headboard. Made the verticals just either side of the rear window for better vision. Cut some thinner tube for the bars but not sure whether to go with the bigger tubes?

@Indestructible 47 l think the bigger tube may look better, the old headboard has thicker tube around the outer section so might try that. Tube in there is 22mm and the other stuff l have is 27mm OD.
Really like the headboard you made for the 79, has good lines.
What size material did you use and thickness 75 x 50mm?
I may have gone a little bit overkill on mine, think l would use 2mm wall tube if l made another one to keep weight down.

Thanks mate, the outer section is 75x75x 4mm which is heavy wall but I want as much roll over protection as I can practically. Internal sections are 75x50x 2.5mm and I can still pick that up reasonably comfortably by myself. The rest of my tray is 2mm and 2.5mm for the side rails to give it more strength for the tray sides ect.

Tubes all welded in now to get some sheet for the wall, not sure what thickness to use here? Have to get some 1.2mm for another project.
Started to clean up the rear chassis as it’s got a lot of surface rust and now while it’s all exposed is a good time to attack it. Found some worn areas and rust build up behind the rear spring mounts inside the rail. Pic below, a spot worth checking on your own ute. Going to rust treat the inner rail and epoxy the chassis. Then spray some lanolin inside the chassis rail to prevent any rust.
