Did some clean up this after noon. This is all I can do for today. I am not done cleaning yet, I think I need to shine it a little more.

HOLY CARBON!!!! :eek:I have never seen that much buildup on the pistons like that it looks like six ashtrays at least your cylinders still look good. You should run a lot better with that cleaned up.
 
Yeah, I am hoping so :). Some of that stuff just doesn't wanna come off but it's getting there. Got almost all the carbon off, gotta love the 3M brush.

I used a 3M red sanding pad with carb cleaner.
 
Yeah I looked at the sanding pad and thought I'd try out the brush. Pad wouldn't be enough for this stuff. Carbon deposits around the edges in the middle of the pistons were realy harden. I scratched the surface of the piston while trying to get them off, hopefully it won't cause any issue.
 
This is as good as it's gonna get. I'm getting tired of this view :D. Waiting to hear from the machine shop on the head. At this point my concern is the rings on the piston. Hopefully they are not in too bad shape. Don't know how to get to the carbon on the other side of the pistons without taking the block apart. Started on the oil pans. I am going to reseal them. Assuming things are OK with the head and looking forward to putting things back together. :cheers:

can one dump a ton of Seafoam or something like that on the pistons in the hope that it will free the rings and dissolve carbon further down?

Looks nice! Are you going to clean the lower intake also?
 
I'm with cpg, the pistons look good, now you gotta clean the intake plenum and you've done yourself well.
 
the intake plenums are easy to clean without removing them. I took a metal scouring pad and tied it in the middle of a 3' piece of 1/4" nylon rope. then I tied a couple rags to the piece of nylon with one rag on each side of the scouring pad. now saturate both rags with carb cleaner and use a wire hanger to push one end of the string up the opening of the plenum and into the throttlebody chamber. now grab both ends of the string and pull back and forth like you are flossing your teeth-the scouring pad and rags will be running back and forth in the plenum. whole process is over in 30 minutes and the plenum is perfectly clean
 
Thanks Dusty. That is pretty creative/innovative way. You are essentially flossing the plenums. Excellent advice. I was gonna use a stick to push the rag from one end to the other but I think I'm gonna give your flossing a try.

Ok guys, how do I find that bright link on the timing chain? That link was far from being bright when I took every thing off but I did mark it. Now that every thing's clean that mark is gone :whoops:. So what are my options?

Picked up the head this evening from the butcher shop :D

Cleaned
Shaved 0.006"
Pressure tested
Full valve job done (using parts from Dan).

Time to put it all back together :cheers:

Looks purdy.

I had excessive carbon build up and was worried about the carbon in the pistons. I did some research on bobistheoilguy.com and bought a product called AutoRX. I figured at worse it couldn't hurt and at best it would clean up the varbon as it was advertized to do. I'll never know how good a job it did unless I tear it down, but over a 2-3 week period my average gas mileage improved. There is a threaqd around here where I posted results.

Like I said, at worse, it can't hurt anything and lots of experts on the oil foprum swear buy it and some have torn down engines with pictures to show what it did. My data point is from November of 05 when I did this though. You have another 2 years of data to sift through.

I have cleaned the bolts as thoroughly as possible. The real test will be when I try to put'em on. I am hoping to keep'em but if any of them has any problem during installation, I am going to replace them all. So copper grease is better then motor oil on those bolts?

You don't have to have new head bolts. Looking at the ones we took out of Rory's rig, they were all within spec. No deterioration due to stretching, etc. They looked just like the new ones we bought up the road from Dan.

We used a rag with some oil on it and only coated the threads and underneath the heads of the bolts on the flanges per the FSM. They went in real smooth. Getting torque to the ones against the firewall were difficult, but we used a 3/8" ratchet with a 1.5' pipe on the end and was able to get the 2 90 degree turns as specified in the FSM.

Head looks great Riad. Keep on truckin' brother.

Yeah, I am trying to plan ahead for the 3 90 degree turns. The bolts don't have any markings on them so I need to get creative I guess. I'm gonna try to do exactly what the FSM says.
