agree with starter, happened to me just as you described on the way to mammoth
was stuck in the value-sport parking lot-feel your pain
hope you get it worked out

Check to see whether yours is original Toyota/Denso replacement. If it happens to be a cheap parts store starter that was put on there before you got the truck there's no point trying to rebuild it, and might as well return for core charge.
 
Same thing happened to me. Was ready to swap the starter on the side of the road but read some mud tips and got it running with a whack of the wrench. Was much happier to do the swap in my driveway.

You likely have a leak from above if you see coolant around the starter.... i.e. PHH... CHECK IT, if it blows on the road you'll be a very sad person!

A little tiny bit of coolant drained when I pulled the starter but I'm not seeing a leak in the PHH area.
 
And there is a PHH extension or relocation kit that I would recommend doing, and wish it was available when the PHH was done on my rig.
 
Got it put back together and it starts like a brand new car. A little In-n-out and hopefully I make back home with no more issues. Couldn't find coolant anywhere. Hoping I was just dreaming it....next week it probably time to pm all the hoses. The starter I believe is oem, label is pretty tatterd, I'll have to inspect more upon my arrival home. I will be doing the PHH bypass when I do it. No reason to mess with that kinda s@&! if I can avoid it. Thanks for all the help!
 
I spoke too soon. Started fine yesterday and this morning. Just went to fill up and it did the same thing it was doing prior to starter replacement. Beat in it and jostled the cables and it started up. Would my next step be replace all the cables coming from the starter? Fusible links?

Yes, Cables and Fusible links if wiggling them made it start. I think I may be fighting a similar issue.

Not even close to 30 minutes unless you have it on a lift and ready to go!

It took me 2-1/2 HOURS and I thought I was really cranking along! I had to remove the LF wheel to get to mine.
 
You ladies (450LX & LS1FJ40) who couldn't make it in the Nation State of Tejas are quickly diverting your knowledge and skill and waisting a possible helpful reply.
 
Sounds like you have a loose wire from the battery to the starter. And Texas rules.
 
My brotherinlaws truck had the same problem with a brand new starter. the nut attaching the cable to the top of the starter was loose. There was intermittent failure depending on how the cable was sitting. Maybe the nut came loose? Seems like you didnt drive that much for it to come loose but it might help the next guy.

Well, I am not an allstar mechanic, but I can tell you it's not a 2hr job! Disconnect battery.....2 connections from the top of the starter, 2 bolts to the bell housing and removing a front drivers side tire.... If it took you 2 1/2 hrs, you're either not using the correct tools, or taking brewski breaks...:meh:
 
Yeah it only took me about an hour in an Oreillys parking lot using cheap tools. 15 of that was waiting of some of said to be located. Real easy job...easier in ones drive way though....

haha.. Don't be so brutal on yourself..lol 30 mins might be on the crackhead side, we will meet in the middle and say it's a 1 1/4 hr job...:rofl:
