Hey everyone!

I just got an FJ40. It was imported from SA and i'm having trouble identifying the engine. I don't believe it was the original engine that came with the truck, because the battery holders seem to be hand welded and the vin on the frame starts with FJ40-*****.
The only 2 things stamped on it that can see are the following 2 set of numbers:

11411-56060
and
1b0841592

other than that, it's 24V and the wiring is a mess...help! o_O

Thank you!

I believe that is a B. 3.0 litre 8 valve diesel. There should be a casting on the intake side of the engine, at the top of the block, under the #4 cylinder intake port. It's no younger than July 1988 and (less sure about this one) would say it is no older than 1984 or 1985.

I’ll check for a casting…thanks!

The side intake on the throttle body, and the radiator cap on the thermostat housing.. I wonder if this engine was out of a Coaster bus.

Good spot on the intake manifold. The thermostat housing is for a 70 Series 3B engine, and looks pretty new.

The red hose between intake and air box looks far too short to absorb engine vibration.

It's been a total conundrum this engine.
I'm pretty sure it's not a 3B because i had to get the water pump rebuilt since non of the ones for a 3B fit.

I think they did that previously since the old intake would go across to where the batteries are now and it wouldn't fit. It might be worth to do a whole re organizing on the engine bay. Unless i swap the engine entirely. But to be honest, this engine rules, whatever it is. Run great! 55mph on the highway and it doesn't sound like it's falling apart. I wonder if I can turbo it?

The rocker cover has some oddities as well.. any more photos? Its definitely in the B series.

This 3B is an exact match to yours..

The engine casting mark will reveal all...

Does the engine in question have a rotary pump? I'm not sure if the B got those before 1988.

it does! with the exception of the oil filter. Mine seems to be back in the firewall, not sure why. I'm out of the country and unable to take more pictures, but first thing i'll do as soon as i'm back is try to see if it has the 3B casting where that picture you posted has it. I haven't been able to see it in the past.

Does you exhaust manifold have 8 or 10 bolts???
Definitely 8 - the later B engines with 10 bolt manifolds are very different.
