Whats the cheapest way to convert to HEI. Any particular dizzy work the best. I have 2 stock dizzy on hand to pull the shaft from and convert. Also I see these same HEI dizzy already done on EBAY but i cant find out who makes them anyone seen or heard of anyone else who makes a kit? Thanks

I got an HEI out of a 80-something GMC pickup with a straight 6. Swapped gear, ground flange and made a bushing for the hold down clamp.

Read it to the end, he mentions grinding off the flange

I went with a gm hei with more mods to keep the original flange. I made a longer lower portion of the shaft by roughly 1/2" and redrilled the gear to sit lower on the shaft. I felt that it turned out reasonably clean. I did it all with simple tools. If you want more information on how to make a longer lower segment of the GM dizzy let me know. You'll need two distributors. So far it's been ok, but it's not a DD so I can't really give a reasonable analysis of long term reliability. I have noticed that it requries about 10 volts to fire, so on a low battery that will still crank it may not start. That may be a coil issue with mine. I'm not sure, but for a non DD it sits a lot and I have noticed that. I'm thinking that it may make it more difficult to push start as well. Anyway, good luck.

JetBoy, the HEI need a minimum of 9V to fire, IIRC. So probably nothing wrong with yours.
I also ran a 30A relay to mine switched with the OEM ignition wire. Just didn't look right to splice a 16 ga wire to a 12 ga wire;)

So many folks on this forum are satisfied with their HEI Distributor choice that this would probably be the wrong place to raise an eyebrow, but here goes!!! The HEI probably gives only 22 to 24 degrees of mechanical advance (requiring some creative carburetion adjustments), and probably only advances between 1200 RPM and 2400 RPM (quick rev, good performance on the street). I am partial to the new full mechanical and vacuum advance Toyota Distributors with the Pertronics and 40,000 volt coil. This set-up gives 32 degrees mechanical, and advances between 500 and 5,000 RPM, on demand. Nothing could be more righteous for on-road and off-road use.

I wouldn't disagree with you on that. I think the issue is usually one of cost and simplicity. I would much rather have a full toyota ignition with hei. I'm mostly happy because the hei is better than what I had, maybe not the best solution. My plan is to swap engines, so I was looking for more of something to work in the mean time. GM makes good "for now" parts... Also my toyota dizzy was shot, the bearings on the plate were all rusted up. I'm not even sure if they are serviceable. I do have vacuum advance on mine.

Downey,
If you want to keep it all Toyota then what's wrong with the 1987> fully electronic dizzy/ignitor setup? Easily available for $100-150(with side cover), reliable, rebuildable, recurvable, and drops right into a F or 2F. The only 'mod' is having to replace the side cover with the one with the 'dent' for the large dizzy cap. What's not to like? :D

Did I mention it's also water resistant with an o-ring cap?

Jim, I guess you are assuming that the vacuum advance would not be hooked up? Also, the truck version is set up differently than the Camaro version, but in either case you can change the onset of advance by swapping springs and weights. As I mentioned, I started with one out of a truck and one of the first things I did was to check the springs and weights and verify that they were working properly. I did have the vacuum advance hooked up because I had a ported vacuum throttle base on my carb (of an FJ55, IIRC). I ended up not changing anything because I was more than happy with the performance.
Just my .02:beer:

I had a DUI HEI distributor in my 40. It worked great and was basically plug-n-play. I will however mention that I had one problem with the gear stripping out and taking out the camshaft with it. DUI replaced the faulty part and replaced the Camshaft. After that, everything was just peachy.

Here are a few links to my threads on Pirate where I discussed my experience with the DUI. Hopefully its helpful to someone.

Is what your talking about the electronic dizzy from a fuel injected 3F ? if so how do you fit on to a earlier motor? I've got a 3FE full electronic distributer and want to put it into my carbed 3F, but the electronic one has no vac advance and I have no idea how the wiring will work

cheers

No, not off a 3F , but off a later model 2F. This one.
