This is the series of posts that covers the issue pretty well:

I plan to mount the switches in the otherwise useless coin slots in the center console which may be a trick as I currently have that area full of thinsulate scraps.

The precise wiring into the connectors is in page BE-101 of post #8 above.
This is a good thread. I may have come across this earlier in my searches but forgot how well detailed it was. Thanks!!

Has anyone good ideas on the heater pads? My install date is 14 April and I need to provide the pads. The switches and seat foam arrived lightning fast from Dave Stedman at Japan4x4 (ordered last Tuesday arrived Saturday!).

I was about to pull the trigger on Dorman's but then I saw the Amp spec at 3.9 and in my limited appreciation for electricity, that would seem to be less than the Toyota circuit supplies. I see the Rostra and am searching for a spec.

Thanks

I am this of these at this point:

The 1870 looks about right.

EDIT: I spoke to customer service at Rostra an ordered the 250-1900. Of note, I am using the original Toyota wiring and switches. It is actually important to confirm that the pas you select are rated to handle 10 amps. Rostra's are, but the Dorman's I was looking at were intended for 3.9 amps max. The Toyota foam has a 3" wide "cut out" in the middle and you have to cut a window in the pad for it. The service guy through this was not a issue but suggested a minimal trim of the length to prevent the pad from getting too hot.

Easy project. You can still buy OEM switches that plug and play into the connectors under the console, and then just add pins to the existing connectors under the seats to control the aftermarket heaters. I added Rostra heaters to my seats when I had the leather repaired last year. My butt has been toasty ever since!

See post #14 in my thread Builds - 1995 80 series build- a rolling black hole where money disappears - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1995-80-series-build-a-rolling-black-hole-where-money-disappears.1349545/

If memory serves the seats are on a 30A circuit from the factory, so the Dorman or the Rostra will work fine. Just get a kit that is spec'ed with only hi/low switches and it's easy to integrate to the factory wiring.

Thanks, that is just what I did Rostra 250-1900 from Summit and a fist full of 090II terminals from Ballenger. I have the bottom foam from Japan4x4 so I can prepare the bottom pads. The Katzkin installer will place the pads and run the wires.

This will be a nice final touch for a rig bound for Colorado.

I just looked at my notes from my install. I did the Rostra 250-1870, but I'd guess the wiring will be the same. I ditched the Rostra switches, relay, etc, as the factory wiring is sufficient for all that. I had to add one ground wire and pin to the harness under the seats. Then I connected the Rostra heaters to the seat connector as follows:

Rostra Blue to Ground
Rostra Green (low) to Pass side blue/black or Drivers side blue black
Rostra Red (high) to pass side blue/orange or Drivers side red/blue

Hope that helps. With the factory switches on the console it makes for a really clean install.

Ok, I do not know what I am doing and do not want to screw up at this late stage. The Rostra kit is great and @redklund5 provided the hints I needed to get the wiring to match the drawings. So, know I need to crimp terminals on the red and green wires for the kit. The wires are 2.0mm outside diameter and the pins are 090II. The crimper has Tabs A-E and no instructions. I think there is one for the wires and one for the wire plus insulation.

Which of the slots am I using? or how do I tell? I assume I am squeezing the wings down into the "V" but would like confirmation.

Thanks

Those pins have two areas to crimp. The forward area grabs the bare strands of wire. Insert it in the crimper with the tabs up towards the letters (probably D) and as you crimp it'll roll them in towards each other and onto themselves. If it's loose after you crimp you can move to the next smaller notch and squeeze again

The rear area of the pin grabs the insulation. You'll use the next size larger crimp notch for that.

Practice on some scrap wire with an extra pin before you go for the real thing.

I got it! "B" and "D" did the job. The four terminals went in to the connector with satisfactory clicks, I spliced and soldered the ground "T" well enough but it will not win any awards.

Good thing, all is wired and current is flowing at the little Rostra pig tail just in time. Then Katzkin installer called and said the leather has arrived and offers us a slot mid week for the new leather.

Replaced leaking high pressure hose and this thing is pretty well done and ready to move to Colorado

Where in CO? My office is in south Denver, I get out there several times a year. Good luck with the move!

Not moving! Car is being handed down from my 91 year old dad to my 28 year old daughter in Westminster. She has a job, but is a professional rock climber when not working. She uses the car on trips east and it has kind of become her climbing "identity." Her S/O works at United Launch in the Tech Park.

We are waiting, but The North Face did a video of her and another doing a hard fist ascent of "Still Life" here in the New River Gorge. When the cinematographer saw the cruiser she immediately re-shot all the interview scenes with the two tiny climbers in the big red truck.

Thanks for the help with this, it is nice to have running so well and reliably.
