Well, the top ones cop the load, the bottom not much there....

When I did mines bottom ones have the most wear .. and was my impression they take ( the bottom ones ) the real abuse ..

Has anyone had any experience using Taiho Kogyo brand bearings? In this or any other application? I ordered my BEB's and bolts through a well known JDM/Import parts supplier and these are what they sent. After reading through this thread and seeing all the regular guru's recommending the ACL's I am questioning if I should return these?

Pretty sure ATEB has been has been installing Taiho bearings for many years, if there was a quality issue it would have shown up by now. That they are made in Japan in reassuring in itself.
Can't find any composition info on em.

The reason for the proliferation of ACL is pretty simple. The problem first surfaced in Australia and ACL is an australian brand.

IMO any good brand is fine, just keep replacing them at 100,000km intervals. These engines are hard on BEB's.

I'm running them.
They are Japanese.
I have another set for my 75 waiting too.

Thats good enough for me :wrench::wrench:

I guess this is as good a time as any to ask ...

Has anyone swapped out their originals and then done the job again after 100,000km and seen anything frightening?

I'm right at the 100k mark on my replacements so I've started wondering. Every now and then after I've really driven the snot out of it when I stop and idle there's an intermittent knock sound like a marble bouncing around. This is on fresh 15W40 synthetic. Then it won't happen again for a few days. It's not a soft tick like an exhaust leak, it actually sounds more like isolated diesel "knocks".

I would still change them every 100,000kms.
heard from guys in Australia swapping them out every 100,000kms because of failures.
just do them, 4 hours of dirty work and $100 bucks.

Is this something that needs to be done every 100k, or just the initial 100k from new ?.

If you don't want to worry about a bearing failure, do it every 100,000kms.

X2... Or just read the last few posts or search mud. :bang:

Just re did mine at he 100k mark since I did them last. When I got the truck the originals were in there with a total bogus 70k on the clock. The originals looked good. No flaking or pitting. I installed tai ho bearings and new bolts at that time.
Last week I hit the 170k mark and pulled it down to do it again. Same deal as last time, no real wear , no pitting or flaking. Sorry I didn't take any pics , but I was impressed with how they all looked and relieved at the same time.
The truck is a DD for the wife and 6 kids, lots of stop and go as well as short trips during the school year. In the summer it tows a fair bit weather it the boat ( about 4k ) and 30foot single slide trailer ( about 7k last year)
The oil is changed every 5 k with Dino rotella or chevron. Boost is set to 14-15 and although fuel is not turned up the aneroid ,off boost compensator and transmission throttle cable are tuned for good in town performance.

After seeing the originals with who knows how many k on them then mine after 100k I believe these engines either had the problem or they didn't. Total crap shoot.

Dear members,

I'm replacing the BEB's on my 97 HDJ81 1HD-FT. Have been hearing a knocking sound thats getting gradually louder in the bottom half of the engine. Tried to use a stethoscope and noted nothing in the head, injectors are all normal, but the moment i put it around the sump and the lower part of the block, the knock is clear. I'm in Kenya, unfortunately, so can only source OEM's or TAIHO KOGYO shells. I'll try and post pics of the old shells. The car was bought second hand with the milage clocked back. I'm guessing its done around 200k+ kms. i've only driven it 40k kms. Wish me luck!!

Good thread with good info, I already got 1 HD-T to retrofit on my LX, so, after read this thread it looks like it made sense to do the BEB's ones the engine is on stand.
I wonder if somebody could provide me with the name or link to buy the ACL 6B8396 supplier, please?
thanks

You don't need ACL. Any good brand will do. The reason ACL is mentioned so often is the problem originally surfaced in Australia and ACL is an Australian company.

Fit anything, check the clearances and check it in another 100,000km.

that is good to know, thanks

Any brand suggestion?

I am in US, so, the 1HD-T is a rare animal over here.
thanks
