Having a few engine dramas with my hj47 2h

jumpin in here with a related question. my 82 hj47 started dumping more coal than usual. used to just blow it on heavy accelerations up steep hills. now it blows it any time I accelerate hard on flat road. this seemed to have happened right after I removed my broken sedimenter and replaced the fuel filter that i dont believe has been changed in a while. was my first diesel filter and i goofed and prefilled it with the fuel still in the old filter. guess i could have figured that was bad on my own but read right after that that was a no no and might damage injectors with unfiltered and tainted fuel. I also thought maybe the extra coal could be the engine getting more fuel now that there is no clogged sedimenter in the way? I just replaced the removed sedimenter with a 296 filter and sedimenter bowl (put it in your spot @duncanrm :) ) but it didnt change the coal rolling. so im guessing its probably related to old/damaged injectors. so my simple question after that long explanation is, whats the good brand of injector to buy? new to diesel so this is the first time ive shopped, but the prices are widely different, so I assume some are s***ty and some are great. hit me with the brand/source to look for :)

Yes, prefilling your new filter with your old filter - not great. Before rushing to fresh injectors I'd put in a new filter prefilled with "LiquiMoly Diesel Purge PLUS" this exact name product - they have a few variations, not all are suitable.

Is your idle high? how much smoke are we talking about? Have you considered the leather diaphragm in the injection pump? It seems unlikely that it would happen at the same time as your filter change.. but its a very common cause when you see a LOT of smoke and high idle.

Typically you dont buy new injectors, you get your old ones rebuilt.

the flat ground smoke isnt crazy, its just there when it wasnt before. its not enough to see out the rear view mirror, but I can spot it in my little convex side mirror. I can take my foot off the pedal 3mm and it stops. now on hills I get thick cloud like my friends patrol pretty much everytime. I have not checked the diaphragm but i did see you mention it in this thread. Ill take a look. Ill also do the liquimoly filter thing too. Im guessing that it needs to be a new filter? lol, so broke right now spending 4gs on a new tcase after puncturing it and then driving it full of mud a few weekends ago. so a new 65$ filter after just replacing it is a lil painful, but willing if thats required hahaha. better then a new engine.

You're paying $CAD65 for a fuel filter? Thats not right, its nuts in fact.. Is this the spin on filter? I pay like $15. Even if you're using the cartridge type in the older HJ47 it shouldnt be anywhere near that.

Here's my guide on the Diaphragm..

haha yeah from the dealership. Lordco (canadian pepboys etc) had them for the same price. wanted to treat the baby good for her first change under my watch, so I got her a toyota one. yeah spin on style. looks like an oil filter. again, new to diesel so Im still learning where I can skimp, and where I gotta pay. there a brand of filter thats considered good but cheap? BTW, that diaphragm write up is absolutely beautiful. Im assuming this can be done with the pump still on the engine?

Yes the pump can stay on the engine whilst this job is done.

I have no idea what brands of filter are sold in Canada.. here in Australia I use the Ryco Z169A.. a search on "Z169A" reveals many equivalents.. your local non-dealer parts place should be able to Cross Ref Ryco Z169A and give you a Sakura, Wix, Donaldson etc.. If you change the filter every 10,000klms you're golden with just about any old filter thats equivalent.
