I hadn't opened my hatch for a couple days then went to and found this. -see videos- Does anyone have any ideas how to go about this? I am not even sure where to start on this.

I was unable to get it to open from the inside too, I can hear the door mechanism unlock.

No major changes since last time I opened it. All street driving.

More than likely one of the cable ends is off the bracket. Possibly broken.

Take the carpet cover off and remove the panel covers on the outer edges of the tailgate and see if the cables are connected. Could be on the latch in the center as well.

If one is off or broken... it will not open.

Try that

So I pull the carpet and those cables were connected. I ended up pulling the handle and I was able to see the cables responsible for releasing the hatch.

The cables are connected and do what they are supposed to, but all of the sudden they don't have even travel to release the latch.

I'm thinking I need to pull the plastic surround off to gain access to the opposite end of the cable to see what is affecting the amount of pull it gets when activated by the handle.

At this point, I'm just documenting for anyone else that has this problem.

The latch release mechanism has this small plastic piece and I noticed it was not going as far as it needed to. Upon inspection, the plastic had cracked and just flexed on the later part of the motion.

Going to try some super glue. I'm not seeing any other way to replace it other than the entire assembly.

This is the replacement part:

Upon reinstallation with the superglue, the mechanism broke again after only a few uses. I am going to try either epoxy or some kind of bolt/nut/washer combo to see what will work. I'll update again for those who may have the issue in the future.

@knewstance, did all that but still not opening.
Have a 2000 LX470 tailgate not opening. I tried every remedy i read from this forum and nothing seems to work. You can hear the motor lock and unlock using the FOB... Opened the cover from the inside and tried opening manually. That did not work. Pulled out the lock mechanisms assy and replaced the broken plastic. also did not work. I do notice when its a warm day it seemed to act up, but it has been a few wks now and hasnt open... Is there any other way to open manually? Seems like the lock latch refuse to release. SMH...Very aggravating ... HELP PLEASE.

…I wonder if there’s a similar latch part in a different Toyota?
4Runner? Sequoia? Van?

I have a complete working assembly but you would have to consider courier costs from Zambia

Here with this problem as well .. and I have a drawer system in the rear.

Would really like to avoid pulling my drawer system apart from the middle cabin of the vehicle if I can avoid it.

Same problem here

My 06 LX has been garage kept since I bought it in early August. Last week I moved to a new apartment complex where I no longer have a garage so she’s sitting outside, and today on a particularly hot day (mid 90s) that the rear hatch door isn’t unlocking from the key fob or front door buttons. It does unlock manually front the inside, and it locks using the fob/buttons if unlocked

Haven’t had a chance to actually go in and look because I just noticed this an hour.

Interesting to see that temperature might play a part in this issue

Id say temp might be part of it.
My drivers side door lock gets too hot to work at the end of the day when facing west all day at work IN THE SUMMER. Dark blue 99LC.
Key works but not the FOB.
once it cools off a bit, it works again.
WHEN I go in to replace the little electric motors for the locks, I might look at putting a bit of some kind of insulation around it or on the door panel next to it. Dunno if it will help, but going to check it out.

Ya, as the motors age and it gets hot, they stop working.

Replace the motor and it should work.

I fixed mine a few weekends ago, pulled out my batteries, drawer system, water bladder ... open the hatch from the inside by manually pulling the wire and replaced the door assembly on my passenger side hatch. Did the trick.

I had this problem and was not going to spend that much on a new latch mechanism, so I 3d modeled the clip & 3d printed a handful out of ASA. Fixed the problem for about 10 cents.

Would PETG work? I have a ton of it, but I have not printed with ASA. Thank you for the .stl!
