That's debatable. I've done both. I smoked for much longer. The dipping seems to catch up to you faster. Then again, I smoked about 2 packs per week for the last 1-1/2 years.
EDIT: Sorry for the details off topic. I quit smoking and food tastes better and that includes correctly prepared Hash Browns.

the best hash browns are left over boiled new potatoes from dinner the night before. slice'em, mash'em and let one side brown then mix it all up and repeat a few times. i prefer them in butter to start then in butter in one pan while I do the bacon in another then switch them to the bacon pan while you do the eggs. diced onions is good but too ambitious for me.

and to make a decent plate of bacon and eggs with hashbrowns and toast with coffee the correct order is

-turn kettle on
-start the hashbrowns on low in a non stick pan with butter
-start the bacon
-put the bread in the toaster but don't start it
-grind the coffee and set up the coffee filter
-put a piece of folded over paper towel on a plate
-put the silverware on the table
-kettle should be boiling, pour the coffee
-bacon should be done, put the bacon on the paper towel to drain
-start the toast
-transfer the hashbrowns to the bacon pan and keep on cooking
-add butter to the former hashbrown pan and put the eggs in it
-get the jam, ketchupand milk out of the fridge
-put jam and ketchup on the table
-grab the newspaper
-put milk in coffee
-return milk to fridge
-toast should pop now
-flip the eggs for easy over
-butter the toast
-put the coffee on the table
-serve the eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and toast

Why don't you just tell me that I don't measure up.

That sound like an good method. I don't drink coffee, so that's out. I don't have a toaster, so that's out. I don't get a newspaper, so that's out. I don't have silverware, so that's no good. I only use one pan to minimize dish washing.

Yeah, I like my method better.:flipoff2:

We had mashed potatoes with supper tonight. Mrs. yooper mixed a little cheese in with them. I ate too much.

We'll use the leftovers tomorrow to make potato pancakes. I'm hungry already just thinking about that...

She is making the potato pancakes now. The smell is KILLING me! Ohhhhhhhh man I can't wait!

mix some cream cheese in with the mashed taters next time....trust me.

Next time?

There was cheese in them last night when we ate them mashed. And some other good stuff. Who do you think you're talking to here? I have Irish coming at me from 4 different directions in my ancestry. I will likely harvest 30 or 40 pounds of potatoes from my garden this year. Add cheese.

For the pancakes tonight, Mrs. yooper added an egg and maybe some more cheese, I'm not sure, and some salt and pepper.

Wow they were good. I felt guilty after I inhaled twice as many as anyone else and both daughters wanted more. :o

Both daughters agreed when I declared the potato as the world's most perfect food. I'm so proud. :D

The potato orgy continues. Tonight I grilled cheeseburgers and Mrs. yooper made oven fries. She cut up some Yukon Gold potatoes into strips about 3/4 - 1" thick, skin on, salted them, sprayed them with olive oil, then baked them at about 400-425° F for about 45 minutes, then switched the oven to broil mode and browned them up for about 5 or 10 minutes. OMFG they were good, also served with steamed carrots and . There are no leftovers. I am a lucky man.

I'm about to eat some hashbrowns...12 at night after a slew of beers.....it's gonna be great.

The above post made me hungry.

I went to kitchen.

I scored wheat thins and Jif.

I propose a toast to your late night foraging.

I am now hoisting up a Dublin Dr. Pepper.

Cheers!

Now, what's a dublin Dr. Pepper?

Mmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmmm

It's a Dr Pepper made with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar.
Dublin Texas is home to one of the few Dr. Pepper plants that uses cane sugar. The owner of the plant refused to convert to corn syrup in the early 80's.
