Has anyone seen a CV boot leaking like this? (3 Viewers)

Reviving this thread, I have a very similar leak on my outer boot and I’m wondering if anyone has had luck with pulling the old bands off and sliding the boot up enough to fill with grease and then re-clamp them? (Without pulling the cv axle itself) if so does anyone have a good write up on this or some pics? Thanks

That is precisely what I did. Just cut the outer band off, pop the boot off, and squeeze new grease into it. Not much to it really. I meant to take pictures but it was a fairly messy job.

The Toyota grease comes with a conical cap and if you cut the end off it it makes a sort of nozzle that fits in pretty well. Replace the clamp with the worm drive type.

Did you buy a boot kit from T to get the grease or where did you get it from? Also if i was going to buy a different grease from somewhere which is ok to use for this?

Looks like oem outbound cv grease to me. Don’t forget the mcmaster carr low profile smooth band clamps.

The only way to get the OEM grease is to buy the boot kit from Toyota. Inner and outer greases are identical, if you are not pulling the boots all the way off then one reboot kit should probably be able to do both axles.

I would personally not want to run the risk of mixing incompatible greases, especially since the boot kits are not particularly expensive, but from the TDS it looks like the OEM Shell Stamina grease has a polyurea thickener and mineral oil base. Polyurea greases are highly incompatible with other grease types.

In December after considerable research I injected a bit of Lucas X-Tra Heavy Duty green grease into my outer boot (which was leaking) and ran it for two or three thousand miles with no ill effects, but I only did that as I was planning a full reboot anyway. Picture of my cv with some Lucas in there is below. When rebooting I meticulously cleaned out all the old grease and replaced with OEM.
