changing the front crank seal (orig 340k 60) and noticed a wear ring from the old seal on the back of the Harmonic balancer. I can barely hang my fingernail in it when dragging across it. Should I be concerned about a proper seal in this condition? If so, what are my options. Thanks, Jim.

Don't know if that's enough to make a new seal leak, but you can either install the new seal so it's in a slightly different spot on the pulley shaft or install a speedi-sleeve or get a new pulley.

I used a speedi-sleeve.

Speedy Sleeve at main seal

The oil seal indent (holder) on the timing gear cover allows the oil seal to be installed at different depths. It's deeper than the seal. Just install the seal deeper or shallower than the original one was and the inner lip of the seal will ride on a fresh piece of the balancer.

Good to know. Unfortunately I already installed the seal and drove it all the way in. Not sure how to assess the fit point without mounting everything up. I'll grab an extra seal at the dealer in case I need to set it at a more shallow spot. Figure I'll damage the other one if I try to adjust it. Thanks for the feedback

I bought a speedy sleeve and did not need it. Lmk @CenTXFJ60 and I could send it to you.

It appears that this is the exact application where you would need one. Call SOR if your not sure... @Cruiser Jimmy had recommended I buy one just incase and I did not need it.

This was how deep my original one was. Luckily I didn't have a groove on the balancer. I installed the new seal to the same depth as the original. This seal is not bottomed out in the retaining groove of the cover. It could go deeper by maybe 1/8".

Wow...I read up on the sleeve. The application seems way over my skill set. The write up references putting it on the crank but the front seal rides on the back of the pulley. Seems it would be easier to move the seal out a bit further to mate against the good portion of the pulley. How can I test fit the position of my new seal without bolting everything back up to the 2F? Unfortunately I pulled the original seal without marking how deep it was set in the cover. Here's a pic of both. The new one is bottomed out. Also included a close up of my pulley.

No no it's way easy. If I can get my sick son off me I'll add a pic here of it. It's just a really thin sleeve of metal for the inner ring of the seal to rest against instead of the indented hb neck. Very very simple.

That ring on your hb is so deep. I don't quite get how that could occur. @orangefj45 or @beno? Would you put your two cents in please?

It's truly not as deep as it looks in the pic. It barely catches your fingernail. It's more polished than anything. The old seal was hard and brittle as it was definitely the original one.

Gotcha. Maybe simply a combo of the old ring and a tight belt. The speedy sleeve tho tho s exactly for that situation from what I understand.

The are one size. Got it from SOR I believe or summit. Like I said sick kid attached to me. It's a really thin sleeve. It has a separate piece for pushing it on and then you snap off the horizontal section w/ pliers.

No sweat. I'll try in a bit. I believe a hb from a 3f fits as IF memory serves right. I could be way off tho. I read more threads than I want to say when I had mine off. @JamesR where did you get your replacement from?

So I'm sitting in my shop having a beer contemplating my options. And then it hit me...I think I have a spare Harmonic Balancer in one of these parts boxes on my shelves. Kept thinking and thinking (it's a pain to rummage through them all) and then it hit me. The Amarillo parts cruiser I picked up a few years ago. Went right to that box and bingo!!! Has a bit of rust, but does not look to have any seal wear marks. Any suggestions on what to use to clean it up? Don't want to screw up the seal surface area.
Felicity, would still like to hear from you when you have time. Want to pick your brain on this project.

Thanks for yall's input. Jim
