I would expect the roof to fail before the bolts.

Agreed

What my co-worker did in his Siena van was built an elevated platform over their feet for the kids to sleep on. But with third row seats you would have to get creative with a fold up platform.

This could probably be done pretty easily also, and placed in the 2nd row seat area. It could also double as a table maybe? Good idea!

I applaud you for taking the opportunity to take trip like this with your family.

Imagine how kids would be if other parents placed same emphasis on family time!

The wife loved the the hammocks and think we may try that in Colorado in July. Have safe trip and take plenty of pics!

Will do! Thanks!

Nice on the hammocks! Pulled the middle row on last trip to snow mass. Kids loved it. 3rd row is fine. The extra room is priceless. Btw.....where did u sleep?????

We're planning to fold up the 3rd row seats and sleep in that area. We haven't tried it yet, but it should work pretty well.

We spent 8 or 9 weekends camping way up north by the Canadian border last summer/fall. At night it can get down into the 30's/40's and sleeping in the tent got pretty chilly (especially for the kids). It was nice sleeping in the back of our minivan because if it got really cold we could just start the engine and run the heater for a while. I plan to do the same in the 80. I may have to get a remote start system so if it gets cold in there I don't have to get my lazy self up

One thing for sure is you are going to remember it :hillbilly:

I think everyone in the family is going to like it better than I will, my wife is under 5' tall and my kids are much shorter. I am 6'3". Luckily, we will probably only spend a few scattered nights in the 80, and hotel the rest of the trip.

I'm 5'10" and have slept in my cruiser with the 3rd row seats up and the center row seats fold (tumbled) forward. I had to sleep at a bit of a diagonal to avoid bending my legs much. By removing the center seats, you should gain about 6 inches over what I had, so it should just work out.

Oh, you also ought to do a trial night in the cruiser with your whole family before embarking on this trip. You might be one sore dude.

I'm 6'2" and run with no 2nd or 3rd row seats whatsoever when camping out of my rig by myself and can barely fit sleeping with my head by the tailgate. My feet end up over the dip for the 2nd row passenger's feet, and I've got to prop them up on something, generally my recovery bag.

This is sleeping straight (my gear and dog on one side of the rig, me on the other) which it sounds like you'll be doing.

You mentioned leaning the front seats forward for the kiddos, which will definitely help your height situation.

I agree with giving it a test run, sounds like it'll be snug! I usually run a full size down mattress topper folded in half and an extra sleeping bag under me for some cushion, the cargo area isn't the most comfortable! What it does lack in comfort I've found it makes up for in head room, there's nothing like being able to sit straight up in your rig in the morning instead of fumbling around between a drawer system and the roof.

Either way, it sounds like it's going to be a great trip!

Just get a tent - I am generally very optimistic but this truck is just too small for this- unless you are ALL under 5'0".
Where is your 6000 miles of vacation gear going every evening.
Forr 100 bucks you could get a tent to house all of you comfortably-with a dressing/mud room to 30 degree temps that sets up in under 10 min. I have done similar thing in a 60 which was larger interior wise and better set up- even w/ full storage -sleeping platform- tenting is far better- all your fridge/food stays inside sealed away from Bear /coyote

Drop the tailgate and close the upper hatch if the weather is nice. Make sure the feet are covered well and stuff something around the rest of the gap. Works great for me. Gotta build up the second row footwells a bit.

BTW I like it.

We brought our tent with us on our camping trips last fall, set it up and then threw all our gear in there and slept in the vehicle. That worked ok too.

My :princess: would love that! She is 5' nothing and weighs 95lbs...I on the other hand would much rather her sleeping by me ;)

The idea is that our kids sleep in the hammocks above our feet, and the :princess: and I sleep on the floor of the 80.

This summer were planning on making a couple camping trips to the Uinta mountains in Utah, we don't have a tent so I think the floor in the 80 will suit my :princess: and I just fine :)

Just make sure you bolt or strap it down since it would be between you and the family.
