Yes. Seems like a basic feature that got over looked in it's design.

Well, then I would suggest looking at the lowest end Yaesu unit for $150 or the Alnico for $130 or the Icom for $425 or the Wouxun for $120.

I agree with Jon. This is a cheap radio that is marketed to the mobile market. I don't think a power port fits into that scope.

So cheap in fact that it'd be cheaper to carry around two charged uv-5rs than it would be to buy a low end yaesu with a power port.

If it's that essential, then crack a uv-5r open and see how easy it would be to add a power port!

Guys I'm not looking for a radio. The OP is/was.

I have 3 yaesu handies and a mobile. Plus this Baofeng.

I simply pointed out what I believe to be a basic and useful feature that my other 3 handhelds have that the cheap little one doesn't. Can you work around it? Sure. Isn't it nice that I pointed out this missing feature to the benefit of other interested peeps who might consider this? I might have paused before blowing 55 on this radio knowing its missing a power port, however I didn't find out until it arrived.

Sorry rusty if you are referencing my power port point which doesn't have much to do with a battery eliminator. If youre referring to another post then disregard this response.

I was just pointing out that there is a solution to what you perceive as a design flaw. It appears that the good folks at Baofeng had the foresight to offer an inexpensive accessory that adds the power port capability.

I'm getting one of these..is the licence a big deal?

We were just discussing this on the GCLC mail list. You have to take a test. The study guides are required to use the actual questions on the exam. So you know the questions before the exam. It's sort of like cheating. It's a very easy test to begin with.

Maybe there should be an FAQ for this forum??

I know some electronics, but I passed Tech without ever studying. I took tests for a couple weeks and saved off the questions I missed. On the day of the test I studied that list. I missed only two on the official test, the best I had ever done. They talked me into taking the General exam since it is free when you pass the Tech. I missed passing by two questions. I'll probably study for it and take it next month.

The Extra is the hard one, but it allows you to get a 1x2 vanity call sign and let everyone know you have skillz.

Extra was easier for me than General. General is all regulations and stuff I hate.

Both are pretty useless unless you get into HF and want to talk to DX.

For 2M/70cm trail use Tech is all you will ever need.

Good to point that option out but doesn't help me easily charge up the battery of the Baofeng.

Anything can be worked around... Seems like I hit a nerve ( not yours but others) with pointing out the lack of the power port.

The $40 price point is great and I'm not knocking the value but let's not pretend its wart free.

Is there any product on the market that meets everyone's needs 100%?

I have a VX-7R, great radio but there are things about it I don't like. The lack of an easy squelch control is a biggie for me. I carry a small inverter to charge camera* batteries anyway so the lack of a DC port is actually less of a deal to me than the Yaesu squelch issue which has no workaround.

At $40 or less the BaoFenge is a radio I can give one of my non-ham friends to monitor traffic with and not worry about, unlike my > $300 Yaesu HT. I can also use it while I'm spotting and not fret about dropping it in the rocks. So the price is a huge plus.

I should probably pick one up before the price goes up like the Wouxon radios did.

*The camera is a Nikon digital SLR which does not come with a DC charging port, go figure.

Mud..

end of story..

Let's say I order this and use it on the trail without a licence....is it worse than getting caught fishing without a licence...or is it one of those things "you heard a guy got caught" through a BIL...not that I'm against taking the test.

Fine can be $10,000 but unlikely you'll be caught. The test is trivially easy, so just no reason not to do it.

it is btw, perfectly legal I think, to use a ham radio for transmission without license if there is a danger to life. So this one is not a bad inexpensive safety device to have, even without a license.

In Canada it is legal to use a ham if you are unlicensed but are under the supervision of someone that is licensed. It is also legal to monitor a ham when you you are alone.

That said, if you are out on the trails with your buds and talking truck to truck on a 3 or 5 watt handheld; most likely no one else will hear you anyway.

The course is not overly hard so you should do it anyway.

RX all you want legally. TX and caught = Felony + fine.

Take the test and be done with it...if I passed anyone can pass :D
