On nogo's advice I extended the T-Case breather. Never gave it a thought before but that was going under water now and then.
I also didn't know that the breather has a built in check valve. Under that button is a spring and rubber disk. Sorry lost the parts before I could take a pic. Couldn't tell if the check valve was functional or not. I prefer the vent tube for my frequency of deep water.
I cut off the little nipple under the button then drilled & tapped the fitting 1/8" npt.
Now I can get the hump back on and wait for the replacement shift cane to arrive.

Today I installed the replacement shifter cane that Georg sent.
So after about 2 decades of owning & driving this rig without the indent springs, I only now know what it’s like to have that “Snick Snick”. I’m like, really happy with it. “Bye bye bungee”.

I love the Shop-Made SST

awesome !

Thanks, I tried a few methods but found this to be simplest and easy to make.
Used the needle nose pliers on the 1st removal and found the locking cup to be distorted a bit. It was difficult to get over the half ball shape of the shifter and also difficult to get it into the top of the transmission by itself for a test fit. I did a bit of tweaking on the cup to get it into shape. I also used an awl to gouge out some hidden mung in the transmission top plate where the bottom edge of that locking cup needs to go to be able to rotate. That's why I showed the test fit in the beginning of the video.

In conclusion I believe the missing indent springs were causing “Both” problems of falling out of 1st gear and getting stuck in neutral.

There was an accidental discovery I made when playing with the shifter by just dropping it in and shifting gears without the shifter spring and locking cup installed. One time I inadvertently removed the shifter while in 2nd gear. When I dropped the shifter in again, it went into the 3rd and 4th gear gate which was in its neutral position. The shifter was locked in neutral and wouldn’t budge. At first, I thought my “getting stuck in neutral” problem wasn’t solved yet. After realizing my mistake and re re-inserting it into the 1st and 2nd gate, all was good.

So, I believe that without the indent springs installed, the adjacent shift gate not in use, could easily get moved at least partially into gear by either bucking motion of the trail, or by a little side pressure on the cane while shifting and dragging the other gate along with the one being shifted.

Maybe replacing the shifter wasn’t necessary but I’m glad I did as it was in much better shape then what I had in there.

It was all the info and pics in ksrunners thread "H42 stuck in gear" that prompted me to open mine up and investigate. Otherwise I'd still be using a bungee.

Can’t wait to get it on the trail and give it the real test.

SOR did the same thing with my bolts too.

You do have to wonder who and how does the training of new hires when someone like Marv is no
longer there to oversee. The cruiser mechanics are dying off faster than being replaced. It takes two to
three years to train the "right" person in the basics. Most never get it. With that it's difficult to take
the risk on new hires. Minimum wage in AZ is at 11.00. Wax on, wax off for 90 days then you find out you have
to let them go because they don't care about the job. They're just here for an allowance. You were better
off not hiring and pocketing the six grand they wasted. The minimum wage thing is unfortunate for the kids
and mildly disabled. No one can afford to take a risk on them aside for fast food

So here's a New one @ SOR for me , or at least it's happened the last 2 order's in the last Month , one that included

@ksrunner 's transmission parts that were shipped to my shop :

- SOR takes 1 big Average Duty clear parts bag and simply tosses ALL your New OEM & Aftermarket Bolts Nutz & Hardware in it

- They then stick ALL the parts tags for All the Hardware to the outside of this one BIG Average size Clear Parts bag

- They then Cover it with BOMB proof packing tape

- when u receive your order u have to Jack-Open the bag with your Milwaukee razor knife u flip open .

- since they covered All the parts with Ball's of tape tags u can't take any incoming inventory of your order via them ?

- then u have to lay out all the hardware on the floor and Play Chess with it to sort it all out

- this was NOT the case up till recently , everything was individually bagged , tagged , & then heat pressed sealed
in it 's own unique parts bag

- i Will say " Long Live Marv "

- All i have to say is the SOR Hardware Single Low Cost 1 Clear Big Bag covered in Wads of even thicker Clear tape is :

I bought a lot of stuff from SOR a couple of years ago. Your right it was all individually packed with part numbers. When stuff came I would write on the packages what they were for and still had problems remembering. Cant imagine all that stuff thrown into one bag.
