Dropping this here for those who haven’t seen, believe they released this somewhat recently. GX460 Single Swingout Steel ***Plated*** Rear Bumper - https://nguyenworksusa.com/shop/ols/products/gx460-single-swingout-steel-plated-rear-bumper

Not my thing but might float someone else’s boat.

Spoke with someone at Dissent offroad and they have a 460 rear in the works as well. Won’t swing with the barn door though.
Talked to dissent as well. If memory serves, they said pre orders around Nov and shipping somewhere around Jan.

LFD just released their hitch carrier

Personally waiting for 1-2 more companies to be on the field before making a decision.

do folks who buy rear bumpers look into the cost to have something custom fabricated? it's seems cheaper to have a shop bend/weld a tubular bumper. with that said i've not looked into having something like this built for me.
I did and went with ExpOne for two reasons: Integrated tire carrier with the swing door making it a 1 handed operation like stock and superior rust powder coating.

JW has a terrible coating for rust states, so I coated my sliders from them myself. That said sliders are an annual coat it item anyways and I just touch them up as needed. Local fabricators that would do anything offroad around me are a 2 hour drive and I don't have the time to leave my vehicle with anyone for a weekend let alone a week without getting a rental. Overall there are not really any local fabricators with good rust prevention. ExpOne is 1 of maybe 2-3 in the country I would even consider, and the others don't manufacture for our platforms. All in I paid $3,000 shipped to my door. The important part I cared about was 1 hand operation so my wife can easily open the rear when she uses my vehicle. The only other option is JW or an imported prado door which is $3,000+ installed anyways.

They want $25 to add a bottle opener to it...

I was able to option a bumper to over $3k, that's wild.
Heck you can get an inexpensive multi-too with a bottle opener and a dozen other tools for that price!

You're probably right that a tube bumper would be something that can be fab'ed up pretty quick and cheap. But a couple of drawbacks would be that the fabricator may need your rig for a while to work from. Another would be as suggested above, it would be just a tube bumper. If you were to want a steel plate bumper, a lot more works goes into that. Usually need to 3D scan the front/rear into CAD so it can be designed, or need the vehicle there throughout the process to get all the lines and fit correctly lined up. And shop hours for fabrication are pretty high, unless like you mentioned you want just a simple tube bumper.

Having just crushed my factory rear bumper this weekend I am now more seriously considering a metal replacement. I can sell my Dirtcom Trailswing to help offset the cost but man they are pricey. I like the Expedition One with the integrated swing or the low pro stuff from Nguyenworks or Ascend Fabrication look cool but I don't feel great about chopping out the factory crossmember on a daily driver.

Do you think you can get your auto insurance to kick in for the rear bumper even if it was on a trail?
May not hurt to give 'em a call!

I personally really like design concept and look of the Ascend, but have some concerns with it given the new rear X-member is quite a bit smaller than the OEM x-member (at least in exterior dimensions - I'm sure it's thicker-wall tubing). I wonder why they did not use something like a 2"x4"x0.188" piece of steel square tube there, which would have been similar to the OEM rear x-member. I also think that as-is it wouldn't work very well for towing given the tiny rear X-member and the fact that the whole bumper bolts on with some slotted holes.

If I ever do a rear bumper I may consider the ascend but would probably re-engineer it to something closer to OEM (bigger piece of square tube at the rear), and weld it directly to the frame instead of the slotted frame holes. That would also help with towing as the bumper would have a similar function to the OEM 6,500# hitch on a GX.

Either way I agree, that's not a bumper I'd put on a DD, and would reserve it for a weekend/trail rig. You also lose the rear crumple zone (styofoam and the perforated rear cross-member) so it would behave differently in a crash.

That's probably not a bad idea. I need to wash all the mud off and see if it's just a matter of getting new fasteners and popping it into place. I am just thinking that it will be annoying to have to re-attached the bumper every couple of trips because the GX's Pixar-mom rear end got dragged across something.

My personal thoughts on bumpers, if I were to get bumpers again, I'd go aluminum and reduce all the weight on both ends of my rig.
And to add to that, lithium batteries as well instead of those two boat anchors (2x Odyssey P1200) I have hanging over the right front fender right now.
At least on this winch I have synthetic line. My last winch was still wire cable.

My other 2 hangs up are weight and interference with the blind spot monitor. I don't need the parking sensors but definitely don't want to lose BSM. I have Dobinson MRA shocks so swapping springs and damping adjustments are easy enough but I'd prefer an aftermarket bumper that's roughly equal to the OE hitch and Trailswing if possible. The GX is heavy enough as is.

I too rely on those parking sensors AND the rear view camera since I have so much stuff hanging off the back.
I still have ALL my parking sensor's with the front and rear MetalTech bumpers I have.
Although, sometimes the front parking sensors get a little finicky when it rains a lot and will occasionally come on and beep when I slow down and/or stop when driving.
And yes, they are wiped off and clean. I know any leaves, dirt, mud, etc. that lands on them will cause them to beep.

Looks like Dissent released their product. This is likely what I will be going with. All I need for my use is a tire carrier that is left hand swing. Dissent fit/finish/quality looks great. I’m just hoping that I can position my wheel/tire on the swing out and still have the window open with everything swung closed (swing gate and swing out both closed/in the locked position). I also appreciate that Dissent took the time to give you a little step on the other side of the hitch carrier to utilize that mounting point.

It is worth noting that Dissent has a double swing out hitch carrier option, but I don’t like that for the GX for multiple reasons. First, and obvious, is the right swing out would interfere with the swing gate. And secondly, that is a heck of a lot of weight to put on the hitch receiver depending which option you choose (ladder, overland container, flat tray, rotopax boxes, etc). I just wouldn’t feel comfortable putting that much weight on the hitch without additional mounting points to the frame like a metal bumper would have.

The Dissent looks like it sticks out a tad more than some other options, but to me it still looks the best and has the best functionality for my use case. I’m hoping to order one soon when I get my wheel/tire/lift selections finalized and ordered.

Regarding using the rear glass hatch with the swingout, I have the MetalTech rear bumper with the full length swingout (spare tire and 2 jerry cans), so I have the same situation.
I can't open the rear hatch without first opening the swingout. But once the swingout is open I can open it and leave it open. We do this when we're carrying surfboards. Not a problem at all.
Only issue is you have to trip the window latch in the barn door so you don't get light on your binnacle, again, easy-peasy.

I can confirm the Dirtcom Trailswing let's you open the rear glass with plenty of clearance on the OEM class IV hitch. If Dissent uses the same tire carrier design for their hitch swing as their bumpers, it should have a fair bit of adjustment available to clear the window.
Having run the Trailswing daily for the last 3 years, I can confirm that the single swing is fine but a double swing would get old fast.

JWOffroad has a new OEM bumper swingout that they are offering. Looks very appealing for retaining the factory bumper cover. JW GX460 Tire Swing outPOWDERCOATED / SINGLE SWING ARM TIRE CARRIER - https://www.jwoffroad.com/products/gx460-tire-swing-out?variant=42528509100225

That looks pretty good, but I’m wanting to avoid chopping/welding anything at the moment. I believe where the swing outs latch in the center is a welded portion. It also looks like it eliminates the hitch. I do need the hitch intact for towing a car to the track. I think the removable hitch carrier is a good solution for me until I commit to plate bumpers.

They claim its 100% bolt on and retains the factory hitch

Anything JW is going to be pretty janky. Not impressed with their service or design. Their sliders, for instance, I had a lot of issues getting installed. I asked them how to bolt in one of the bolts that was not going in. They said just leave it out and left it at that. Would be wary trusting that with a hitch if you plan on towing. As for it being bolt on, should join the fb group GXOR, there are a few posts that show how "bolt on" it really is. It may have some problems addressed, but I've seen guys trying to install theirs over the course of weeks, to months due to issues.

My experience with simple ditch light brackets from JW was not good. He eventually refunded half the cost due to obvious QC issues but it took awhile. JW would not be my first choice for more complex things like a swing out tire carrier.
