I just swapped out my KMH speedometer with this beautiful MPH speedometer. I was hoping it would fix my speedometer being off by 8mph. It didn't. It was still off by 8mph vs the GPS app.

I figured the cable might be rusted up and binding in the sleeve, so I replaced the speedometer cable. No change whatsoever.

Turns out that Toyota made a bunch of speedometer gear options for this truck. That's kind of handy, especially if you change your tire size. The gear inserts into a sleeve on the side of the transfer case. Super simple.

The shafts are labeled by tooth count:

6x15 teeth 33403-69165
6x16 teeth 33403-69175
6x17 teeth 33403-69185

Each of these is only like $15 from PartSouq, so I bought a full set.

Also, got a new sleeve + o-ring to house it all. 33404-30040.

After playing around, I found that with each additional tooth, the speedometer slows down by about 3mph. Using the GPS app, my speedometer showed 8mph high, so I went from a 6x15 to a 6x17. Almost perfect now.

There are two size options for driven gears. I believe the size bumps up at 18 teeth, requiring replacement of the internal drive gear and not just the plastic driven gear. Way more work.

6x18 teeth 33403-69195 (bigger gear style)
6x19 teeth 33403-69135 (bigger gear style)
6x20 teeth ?????

Oops. I knew I was probably wrong on those part numbers. I can delete my post if you want me to.

i'm off by 10mph,,, i would ask to buy the 6x19 from you but it looks like you didnt get it.
Which one are you starting with? What gear do you have in there now?

@FJ73Texas no worries. I'd love to get this list complete. I think @cruiseroutfit has the list we need. I would love it if they could offer a full kit of gears to just buy off the shelf. It would certainly simplify dialing in the speedometer when changing tire sizes.

Where did you get the mph gauge? I'd love to not have to do the conversion in my head or run Waze all the time once I get back to the US.

I bought mine from Pakistan. @Zee imported it for me. It was a lot.

You can also get them from Yahoo Auctions Japan imported through Buyee. Here's the search:

It won't work on a 1995+ cruiser. At least not that auction one. Just trying to save you the money and headache. I deleted all my files and photos but there is a difference in the lighting method in the cluster housing because of the 1993 transition from metal face to plastic face. If you like driving with a dark speedometer at night then buy it still.

An inexpensive solution is to simply buy a GPS speedometer HUD. I seldom if ever look at my factory speedometer.

Would love an EL wire for the 70 ser like we got for our 40s all those years ago ...

I can't say I ever heard of "El wire" so I am not sure what that is.
It's Spanish for "the wire". Just like San Diego is a whale's vagina.

Yeah I am used to Spanish (or spanglish rather) here where I am. Haha…

I just thought it was a product name is all.

@prwillard2

“I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.”

@ATL Cruiser that speedo is absolutely gorgeous.

Lost in translation like “Juan Pelota”? (A coffee shop in Austin.)

It was some LED rope type/ electroluminiscent lights that we bought from here all those years ago but search is not helping me right now ....

Some more info. Electroluminescent wire (or EL wire for short). So that solves the mystery of what "EL wire" is. Great solution to the issue I mentioned earlier.

Fwiw, there are are at least 4 drive gear options used in the Split Cases, 5, two 6's and a 7, unfortunately not all are available.

I'm still working on the correction gear chart. Unfortunately the direction many need to go (indicated speed reads low due to larger tires) means they need parts that are NLA but I think we've found some workarounds.

Ratios available range from .263:1 to .412:1 so there is an opportunity to get a bunch of correction (if all those were avail)

Using the 6x15 to 6x17 as @ATL Cruiser did would give you around a 12% decrease in indicated speed or ~8mph @ 70mph so that tracks with his findings. Do you recall which speed you were measuring your change at @ATL Cruiser ?
