Getting ready to install the Grom unit in my 2009 LC this weekend, what's the easiest/best place to mount the GPS antenna/Microphone? Curious if the GPS antenna can be mounted under the front center speaker grill and still work.

Get it when it’s on sale during the periodic group buy.

Install it yourself. You literally need to know how to use a screw driver. And even if you not mechanically inclined it’s pretty easy as long as you take your time.

I am 99% satisfied.

Love that I can use a good modern nav system. Listen to music and podcasts.

It has tiny glitches but with all the updates it is very very stable.

I can see a nice big screen of dashes with OBD FUSION on the OEM screen

Haven’t really fully utilized the apps and streaming but potential is there.

I’m gonna use the AV in to hook up a dash cam.

If you do buy one order the av aux cable too.

They now do hdmi in and out so gonna mess with that too.

I ran the cable out of the speaker panel and just flipped the gps antenna on the dash at the very front edge.

I’ve heard of people attaching it under the speaker grilled/screen and saying it works fine but I’m not sure if there is a good way to measure the gPS interference doing that. So I left it out on the dash. I can barely see it from my POV. And in case I need a signal in a pinch I didn’t want to compromise it in any way.

Makes sense, thanks. Where did you place your microphone?

From my understanding my model for the 2017 uses the OEM mic.

But If I were doing it with a mic run it up inside the a pillar. Easy to remove on mine. Then very easy to run the wire in headliner above windshield. And then make it come out the roof center console.

Again I have not done it with a mic. But I am doing that for wires for my dash cam.

I did the same, it will end up right above the rear view mirror. You can even route it towards driver side seat if the driver is the primary person talking.
Be cautioned that the mic doesn't work that great but help siri questions and dictations. Bluetooth callers are not that happy when we speak with this mic

So in the end, is it worth it guys?

650 for the unit. $350 for professional install
I personally feel that $350 for professional install can be avoided if you can do it yourself. (Not difficult).
Is this worth it?
If your system is very old (2008) and screen is dull, you may look at other options where you replace the whole screen with better larger touch screen. (Tesla style and other smaller options are available). The problem with these units are that they may not last as long. If you factory unit is on its last leg, it may be worth upgrading to these units. which cost around 900-1000$ . These units are much more easier to install than grom as grom tries to coexist with factory unit. Hence the wiring is not as simple as installing these larger screen units.

these larger screen units are even more easy plug and play as your remove old unit and put all the wiring into new unit.

If I were to install this in my 2019 do I need a separate mic? Can’t seem to find this info

Also - where are you guys mounting the device?

yes you need to use the mic which comes with the kit. Not the built in mic.
We mount the hardware under the glovebox. (some do it in the glovebox as well), the mic is routed into the headliner and can be made to come out near the rear view mirror or driver side. Honestly the mic which comes with kit is very noise and not clear. Doesn't have noise cancellation into it.

I think the mic installation is only required for certain models years. I just installed the VL2 in my 2013 LC and I did not have to install a mic, it just used my OEM mic. Making calls through CarPlay has been just as clear (if not even better) as the existing BT connection to the vehicle

Thanks. Good to know. Do you know if there's a list or somewhere to confirm what model years require an external mic?

Installed a vline2 I to my 2010 GX460 for CarPlay, and I’m having a couple issues. 1) When I first installed it I had disconnection issues and bugginess with sound and mic. Like not working at all. 2) Once I got it “working”, the sound would not play until I activated Siri and canceled. Then it worked fine. Beteeen number 1 and 2 I repaired the Bluetooth connection, which I assume could be the culprit. Still, having to activate Siri to get audio working is BS. So I repaired again and the audio seems fine. BUT, I get CarPlay weak connection (or did once when I was initially testing it out). That felt s***ty.

So, I left it be and decided to drive it once or twice before doing another repair/handshake (which is oddly difficult). My question to the group is what the latest firmware is… I feel like mine may be old after restoring it to factory (I did this because I bought it second hand — it was new about a year ago, and the dude sold his truck). Anyone else with a GX (10-13) who can tell me their firmware? The grom site isn’t helpful in this dept at all with the vline2, and without a number troubleshooting stinks.

TIA.

I have a 2013 LC as well

How do you like grom? Any issues?

Thanks and I await your response

It’s been ok so far. I’ve only had one issue where it wouldn’t start up properly but an ignition cycle fixed the problem. I think my only real complaint is that you can’t listen to native audio while CarPlay is displayed on the screen. I think there are other options that still allow you to show CarPlay but listen to other audio sources (you can’t hear CarPlay notifications/turn by turn directions though) that I might pick if I had it to do over.

The wife has been experiencing a CarPlay lockup usually once a day where the screen goes to black with "CarPlay" in the center and is unresponsive. It typically takes turning the car off for a few minutes and restarting it to get it to function again. I've sent a support email to Grom but has anyone else encountered this issue? (2009 LC with the VLine2)

I’ve been getting that but seems like when I have a good connection and then I make a quick stop and I turn the car off. Drop kids off and back in the car in a few minutes. Then when I turn car on the iPhone has trouble reconnecting. Happens like once a week ish.

Quicker solution is shut the wifi off on your iPhone. It will say car play will disconnect and you say okay and then grom will reconnect CarPlay automatically and usually problem fixed. No need to turn off car.
