Love the second photo in post #124! I think you've already found the next owner for Grandpa's FJ, bet by the time she takes over she'll be able to teach the boys a thing or two about serious offroading!

Wish we would have had some time tonight to take a peak at your timing. Lemme know if I can help out with anything.

Good Club

Yeah there are plenty of guys here close I'll get it taken care of, don't know if  will be the best currency. It is utah so even the beer we have is like water for people!

We'll get this done this weekend.

Still Sputtering

So I'm still sputtering and struggling. My timing is right on with the manual. Idles great but it feels like it starts to miss on acceleration. I don't think its fuel delivery my carb was rebuilt last year and was working great. I pulled my plugs and they looked fine I believe it might be by cap and rotor. Basically I'm at a loss right now.
On a good note heres my sliders installed!

I had a sputtering issue a few years ago. Everything was fine until 2500 rpms and then it would sputter and miss until about 2800 rpms. After trying and testing everything under the sun and cursing a lot I tested the alternator on a whim. It ended up having a bad rectifier plate. Swapped it out and has run perfect since.

If it's idling fine but sputtering under throttle you may want to check the fuel filter as a simple fix. I had a similar problem on another vehicle a few years back, I checked all the complex stuff first only to replace the filter and be good as new.

Cruiser looks great by the way!

New plugs, cap rotor same problems. Took apart the distributor and cleaned it well. Mechanical advance works great, so does the vacuum. Still a stutter. Could be running rich. Need to adjust carb maybe? Took old plugs out and it looks like there is some blow by. So need to adjust the valves and may need a valve job. So now I just need to find a decent shop to help me out!
Calling on all for recommendations of mechanics and or machine shops that can do this as I'm way over my head.

Micah I just went through all this. If you want my .02 I would be glad to try to help. Once the lightbulb goes off adjusting the valves is very easy. Took me a minute to grasp the concept. Gladly share my laymen's knowledge if you want. PM and I will send my phone #. Worth a shot????

GIve Up!
Yes I do, well kinda. Troy gave me his mechanic's name. Larry Plowgian on 33rd south. Great guy, funny he is actually one of my dad's clients.
So I dropped it off after 3 hours of banging my head against the long block. I rebuilt my distributor inside and out. New cap, new rotor, new plugs. Still the hesitation like its missing. Anyway long story short I found a couple of bolts that are not in good shape that I need a shop to fix. The fixed end of my alternator adjustment arm isn't even bolted in. so that needs to be fixed. I'm sure Larry will get this taken care of.

I do feel like a failure, but that's why I sell insurance and am not an auto mechanic. Just hope it doesn't hurt the wallet too bad!

Micah, what did you figure out? Running like a champ again?

I need to do a valve adjust on my 40 in the coming weeks (pre-Cruise Moab). Doing 2 at the same time is just a few minutes extra, LMK

K, it will be a night next week for me. Lets touch bases next Monday?
