Got my Scangauge II!

cpg, I wonder if there is something off with your gauge or sensor or thermostat?

if the thermostat starts to open around 180-185, it is highly unlikely you would get any lower than that coasting down at high temperatures outside since the fan / rad are no longer in the picture when the thermostat is closed.
I am not sure if the gauge is correct. While coasting down hill I am pretty sure the air flowing thru the engine bay will cool it off easily since it is idling only also the water in the rad will be cooled.

Because it can calculate the GPH based on the parameters the ECU provides.

Trust me, it's accurate. Always within 1% all said and done at the end of the tank.

that's good. Not sure how the ECU can quantify gas flow that accurately, though. From injector parameters?

on the 100 Navsys, the avg mpg is easily off by 0.5 mpg out of 17 or so, in my experience.

after talking to some people, I think the temps at 190-200 are normal. What I don't know yet is how the temps react in trail conditions, but will keep an eye on it.

While mounting your Scangauge II to your 1995 fzj 80, has anyone noticed how many wires go to the OBD II port ? I count 4, but don't know if that is factory original, or if the PO has been in there before me. I would appreciate some feedback, as my Scangauge II is on order.

Well, I've been borrowing a Scangauge for a few days (thanks Ruadhigh) and as expected my temps. rarely every get over 194*....

Some recordings:

City/highway/traffic/idling driving style: IA: 104*-127*; WT: 188*-200*.

The only time the WT ever went over 200* was after the engine was shut off and immediately after that the temps sometimes read around 204*.

I am going to wheeling on Sunday and I am going to bring this again and see how it does after about 3-4 hours of stop and go, slow moving, high torque, low air movement situations.

I feel much better about my cooling system (though I am overly anal about it anyway) after seeing these readings.

Useful tool. I'm going to get one in the future.

Cheers.

onur,
I would love to hear how the temps react. On a recent trip, my truck lived at 195-ish no matter what. It hit 203's on a freeway grade pushing it... from cold, going easy around town, it is around 185

maybe I have to look at my radiator...

thanks

when I'm wheeling, in relatively hot weather (say 90F), at low speeds but reasonable power I'm usually around 195-205F (from memory). If I'm doing steep hills up in low in hot weather and low speed for long periods of time, it can go up to 215 or even 220F or so but that's rare.

Eric, you being you, I imagine your cooling system is in top condition?

well, I thought so, but now I've read some posts about folks getting much lower temps that what seemed normal earlier, so I may have to dig in... :D

I haven't done anything to the fan yet but that seems interesting.

peepers,
the way I did it is to go into the MPH choices-->MPH or KPH-->and then there is a % correction in 1% incriments. So if you are 5% off, punch it in.
sorry, don't know how to calculate gear+tires... if you have gps, you can compare the scangauge and gps and punch in % until it matches...

Eric, you mean you don't have the blue fan clutch or that you want to add an aux fan like Romer? Do you have a new radiator?

x2...Unless Scangauge has updated the software to handle this differently you simply go in and adjust the "adjustment %" up or down compared to stock. Mine is like a 5.45% increase compared to stock and IIRC the Scangauge offers adjustments at .1% increments so you can get pretty close.

I know (when I remember) to input my #'s on fillup it is pretty close to spot on with what Scangauge estimates I used fuel wise to what I actually put in.

thanks guys, i will try this sometime this week!

Just received today, in the mail, my Scangauge II. I bought on EBay for $140 delivered.
I also finished up my coolant replacement from green to Toy red with a new OEM T-stat today.
The installation of the Scangauge was a piece of cake ( cake ?). I mounted it to the left side of the steering column near the air vent so I could still see the idiot lights (pics to come of some idiots). I routed the cable through the small gap around the steering column and tucked the cable out of sight inside the fuse panel. The fuse panel door closes because I unscrewed the OBDII connector and spun it 180° and mounted it pointing downwards instead of outwards.

With the new coolant and T-stat, the temperature went up to 184°F and stayed there when idling. More testing is on the schedule.

Question:
Does anyone know what gauge readings will be made available with the rumored new Scangauge firmware and will these be compatible/readable on the '97 LX ? I ask this since the current fuel pressure gauge reading is not available with the FZJ80/LX.

Damn, you guys just made me spend $150 (149.95 to be exact) :flipoff2:

I've been itching to get an ODBII scanner for a while now - glad I didn't get one before reading this thread :)

And a second question: Will it be updateable by computer (ethernet cable) or do you haveto send it back to scangauge?

I spoke to Scanguage last week and the tech there said this week they would be releasing the new software version. When ordering the unit, you are just supposed to mention that you want the new version. When I asked him about tranny temp, oil press etc. He said depending on what our OBDII read in the vehicle would dictate what the Scanguage could show you. He did say that in order to get many of the "custom" reads to show up you would manually have to enter the code into the Scanguage in order for it to show up on the display. Apparently these manually entered codes will be available on the website this week. I am going to order mine this week and see what I get for readouts.
