Well done Jason. I don't recall ever seeing a grill alternative for an FJ 60 before. With that creativity there is hope for our rigs as parts become obsolete. Thanks for your ongoing efforts.

Wicked.

This one sits a little bit more recessed than the stock grill, but appears to be even with the lower valence. I don't know how you made that, but hats off to you sir.

Thanks A, since it uses the OE clips and is on the OE grill frame it should sit in the exact same spot. Even the face of the new grill is approx. where the face of the OE grill was. Optical illusion ... not sure..

You should name this one "the moustache ":D

I call it "Squidly" and Andrea calls it "Mr Mustache"

Not bad! I would like to see it without the Toyota badge just to see what it looks like.

If I ever take the grill back off I'll take some pics without the badge.

I'm guessing a 300.00 grill and a very necessary item when you do a V-8 swap and need that extra room for trans and engine oil coolers....yes?

Dave, Removing the "guts" yields approx. an 1.5" space purchase throughout. You could gain another .5" by moving the grill face all the way outward to the edge of the frame.

Not my cup of tea, but nonetheless, good out of box thinking Jason.

Not sure how much I like it yet. I like the clean look, but its too clean IMO, if you catch my drift. The other two patterns will tell the tale. They have less "open" area and I think that will make a huge difference.. Mood is everything with me when I do these types of projects. This grill helped me get through the other evening, so...

Yeah, I did a couple grills some years back. I didn't gut the plastic as you did. That hadn't occurred to me, but then again a large number of the grills have cracks or are missing a mounting ear anyway. I bent the perimeter with 1/2 " tube then filled with 1/4" rolled expanded metal.
The stock plastic makes it very hard to run extra coolers. I had a large tranny cooler, engine oil cooler and P/S cooler tucked where all that useless plastic was. I billed 5 hrs on that....about 400.00.

J....you might have to re-name goss with that new front bumper....my suggestion. (color still works).

Ooh... I kinda like the grille.
A bit too flat for my liking, but I love the fact that you can fit allot behind it.

I've been thinking in the same lines...and about putting slight horizontal breaks/bends in it, an illusion of the original lines in the plastic grille...making sense?
Something like '''''\_/'''''\_/'''''\_/'''''\_/''''' just a few mm's in and out.

How is airflow through the mesh?

I have SAM chosen for another project down the road one day.

I may try a few other designs and contours. I have two other mesh styles and don't like either..

P, 65% open air mesh, airflow is just fine. The 4BT (mine anyway) runs super cool anyway. I have to block off the entire grill in the winter for the heater to heat decently and get it up to 180-190F. My electric fan is never used in the winter... . Last July (95F daily) running back and forth to the gas plant. 80 mph for 70 miles on the interstate yielded 190-200F. Idling for hours on the job site and driving around the plant 10mph or slower... 180-210F. Electric fan kicks on and its down below 180F in less than 5 minutes.

... what you need, Jason, is a grill like the half tracks had , with folding horizontal shutters. You'll have the horizontal lines of the stock and be able to keep bullets and cold air out of the radiator. You could paint offensive signs on the flaps in a mirror image that could be read through the rear view mirror of the slow driver in front of you. They would only be visible with the shutters closed.... Of course if you're doing 80 mph all those annoying slow vehicles are going to be Land Cruisers... might be a bad business move

What he needs is a shutter-stat grill! (I believe the White and GMC half tracks used them too)

Thermostatically controlled so they don't open until the engine is up to temperature, and very nice to let the engine warm up faster.

And here I thought they closed for bullets.. Either way they were cool

I'll bet the half tracks could do both. Shutter-Stats are typically open by spring, and closed with air pressure. So it would be very easy to add a regulated air line to allow them to be closed for bullets and the like.

I need to go find a half-track to see if they were built that way (they should have been, IMHO)

there's an old wrecked one on the way to the "Hole in the Rock" trail. It gets a little more picked through each time I see it. I first ran across it in 1990,
the first trip for me on that trail. It was still there, a little more worn and rusted, two years ago

Still there last May. Amazingly many of the bearings in the track wheel carriage still turn smoothly like they could be salvaged and used again to restore another half track. And considering it's age, it isn't that rusted with plenty of paint still left. The real rusty parts are the hacked together welding bits added by some farmer long after the war it was built for.
