The throttle cable arrived today - Thanks JohnnyPorp.

I took a long lunch break to install it and work on a little shifter problem I was having. Both went very well. While the shifter still needs a little tweaking, I drove the goat today. What sweetness after a year of planning and work.

Still have a lot of work to do, but the Goat is back in action.

It turns out that my electrical problem is just that my starting battery crapped out. I really flattened it after incorrectly wiring the alternator. Good thing I have two batteries. I'll replace it when I get around to it.

I put about thirty miles on the Goat last night. Felt really good. Way more power. First gear is really low. I'm already turning heads. I don't know whether it's that it's a diesel or just the snorkel sticking out of the hood. :)
 
G&S were able to provide me with a 12V diesel tach from an Aussie HJ. It's a bolt-in. The plug to the dash harness is the same and has an identical pinout.

It drops right in as long as you reuse the existing tach wire. Just disconnect it from the ignition coil and connect to the tach sender on the bellhousing.

So the exhaust is now finished and new Optimas installed. I got the group 31 commercial, deep cycle type this time. The batteries are so big that I had to get creative with their hold-downs.

I have pics. I'll get them uploaded when I have a little time.

I still have a few issues to work out. I need to have the injectors rebuilt. Front add-a-leafs are on order. I have a bizare vibration issue with the clutch and tranny input shaft that I still need to figure out.

I'm going to start another thread about the last issue.

I've been driving it for a couple of months now. I can't hear the airflow though the precleaner but I can see the crud swirling around inside. Pretty cool.

What I can hear is the exhaust. Through straight pipe the turbo sounds sweet. :cool:

Fortunately for my truck, my little cruiserhead :princess: will not be learning to drive for another 5 years. :) At that point, we have talked about getting Carmen her own cruiser.

I used the stock down-pipe from the turbo, and then to 3" pipe. It was pretty cheap. I bought the pipe at a local auto parts store and had it bent at a muffler shop. I did the install myself. Worked oout pretty well I think.

There is also a specific reason that I didn't go 3" all the way. That is for water crossings. I figured with a 3" exhaust I might not be able to keep the RPMs high enough to keep water out. The slight restriction created by the 2 1/8" section of pipe makes the exhaust gas flow faster in that section, keeping water out a little better.

Just wondering coz here I saw few 12H-T with 2.0" and then 2.25"

Your exhaust looks a lot smaller than 3 inch up near the engine in the photo posted. When I first fitted my turbo and it was using the 2 3/4 inch dump pipe back to where the 75 system was 2 1/4 it was very quiet and the turbo really whistled. After fitting the 3 inch mandrel system the turbo lost its whistle spools up straight away and the precleaner is really noisy now.[great sound]. The water I have been through lately does not seem to effect the exhaust although I still am a bit nervous how the cold water straight onto the turbo effects it with deep crossings.:D

The stock pipe is 2.5" and then reduces to 2.125".

Well keep in mind that I am operating from ignorance. I haven't actually done any serious water crossing to date. :cheers:
 
Just finished installing a 5-speed shifter from G & S too. It was from a RHD truck so I had to heat and bend it. I don't think I bent it quite far enough, but it sure shifts a lot better than the 4-speed shifter ( which I found out was also ruining the shift tower innards).

I'm glad I didn't use that shifter any longer. The 5-speed tranny is new. :doh:
