So it looks like the GMB 'Made in Japan' cast-iron water pump for early F and 1.5F engines is a gonner ? GMB part # 170-1080

First, 'JAPAN' was deleted from the casting on available pumps, even the reboxed NAPA, so I assumed GMB had moved production to Chyna... 😥

Now seems the pump is discontinued? (there are still some available, but all are without the Japan marking).

Anyone verify?

I went to the GMB website and asked the question if this model water pump had been discontinued.

I'll report back if I get a response.

i think covid19 moved the whole manufacturing to another south east asia country ...

DENSO 's new global headquarters and major manufacturing is now based out of Jakarta Indonesia .......fyi

I did a week ago. No response, yet. I don't expect one.

If they're still in production, they will be made in China or other So. E. Country, most likely, like the other brand that's available.

FWIW, SOR has a few of the Made in Japan pumps left, as does CruiserTeq, for a, there's-only-a-few-left price. :meh:

This is why we hoard :D:oops:

Yes, they are NLA. We ran into this last year fwiw, this is an email from December 2023.

We discussed what number is needed to spool up production again. I need to follow up and see where things landed. It’s on a long list of items we are working to re-source, tons of discontinued items as of late.

Personally I recently decided for my F.5 to go the route of a 2F fixed fan waterpump.... That was before this news but that confirms the choice.
You just need to find the correct 2F pulley for this change (single groove ones can be found NOS in GCC or reproduction for cheap).
At least the 2F WP is easily available both OEM and aftermarket...

Considering going this route for my F.5 since finding a reasonably priced quality water pump is challenging. Mine is a 1974 dropped into a 1969 truck. straight-arm alternator mounted to the driver side of block. Is that the same setup you have and if so, which pulley did you go with? Anything specific I should be looking for? With so many water pump posts, it's hard to find info about my exact setup. Thanks!

Sounds like the same setup yes.

Went with the 16371-61010 pulley. Found it NOS here on the Classifieds section from a vendor based in UAE.

But I also saw some aftermarket reproductions or used ones. Being only 1 groove it's a lot less looked after than the 2 or 3 grooves versions.
Pump is 16100-61012.
You will also need a plastic fix fan if you don't already have one. I think the 6 blades one in the picture isn't available anymore...

"Dry tested" in the air next to my old pump that the alignements were good (pulley groove with other pulleys and fan not too close to radiator) and that looked good.
My FJ40 is actually currently at my mechanic to install it, should have it back in a few days to confirm. From what I heard it's now installed (and now doing other stuff planned). Only complain I heard from my mechanic is the 4 old bolts that broke in the engine block while removing the previous pump (installed since 1977...) but that another story.

This is the amazing and with picture to illustrate! Perfect, thank you.

the thread starter & myself discussed my evolving idea to do a brief Tech Savoy historical timeline , and over breakdown on the now suddenly gone

forever and indeed still needed by all here ......

i personally have and no had , fondness for a real long term made in japan Spec. part like this because i have never ever heard of one failing in the short term or a single new out of the parts box defect ....

it was always within the reach of me growing up and also was a core key parts kit foundation part for me over the years , up until i got a few that has the JAPAN BOLD cast WORD Grinded on the long straight down the middle oddly ?

this was in the middle ish of COVID19 crisis , and @cruiseroutfit date circa. of latish
2022 is spot on , when i got the first of 2 small batches of the defaced ones that were otherwise perfect and JAPAN bearings and the TOP shaft text all same as always ........

These 2 corporate GMB TECH reel shorts , fundamentally describe and show correctly the TECH of all Vintage TOYOTA OEM water pumps and the Fan Clutch Option if you have one also ,,,,

This was my first initial stock order of the GMB 16100-60080 , early march 2019 for planned upcoming store fire-wall down and see what happens after that day , that occurred naturally when it did on its own because that is how a some what big thing like that happens ,......

i have always had a major fascination with anything on a TOYOTA especially a Land Cruiser that Holds , pumps , keeps in reserve , expands and contracts via a tiny paraffin wax pellet deep inside it , and of course how a long thin solid core spring'd steel piece of thin 1.5mm OD wire threaded through a then black solid tube of black nylon plastic traveling 16" to a up and down vertical valve that's sliding up and down Stainless steel shaft some how never seeped a drop of
FACTORY FULL RED FLUID ever , all the way to 40 + inches from knob to blend air flapper door all seamlessly worked all so well still from a 12/78 born on date all the way 11 years 3 months and 7 days when i got to first push and pull and scoot over to the fender apron to see exactly what was different or changes when the knobs are fully pulled out and then once again fully pushed in and again and again ,.,,,,,

so all the
2F and older water pumps were horded up like below in numbers , and laid out so i could size up exactly why i had ordered , posses and now stand totally awe struck in the once in a life time presence of so many SPARKY BLING 16100-60080's .....

i have never ordered that many Land Cruiser anything water pumps all at once , since that totally
magical moment-filled day you see below ....:D:wrench::wrench::wrench::wrench:
