Poor neglected beast. No cruiser should suffer this way waiting for other projects to get outta the way. :frown:

Deliveries from Summit and Jegs arriving soon!:D

Can't believe it was difficult to get a set of standard piston rings delivered for a .030 over SBC before next year.

Ok this is probably a poser shot, but I am doing my part to lighten Santa's load on Christmas Eve.

1st round of new junk to go in the old bullet. Step 1: check rod bearing clearances.....

And Merry Christmas to all you gear heads following this saga of mechanical renewal:cheers:

Awesome Build

Okay another curious surprise :hhmm: I guess I missed this part when a friend and I originally assembled this engine 20+ years ago. A rod bearing notch misaligned enough that it appears I'll need to machine it down to flush.

Anyone seen this sort of anomaly before?

The solution for the oddball connecting rod. Got to make about .06 go away. Going to be tedious cutting the bearing and not the rod. Better tooling would make it easier.

Weighing in some new pistons. After a moment a boneheadedness with an ill conceived attempt to remove a connecting rod in the press. I distorted one of the original pistons. At least this the probable cause for one piston not fitting in the hole.

They are old enough that a match of just one proved impossible to find (unless I'm willing to look forever) Not. So a new set it is and next stop is the machine shop to install them properly.

Got fresh pistons swapped onto old rods.... the right way:p

End gaps look great on all the rings.

Should be putting round things back in their holes by the weekend.:D

Progress! :bounce:

Next item is probably putting in that bumpy stick thing...

Chipping away one little time window at a time....

I'm probably over sharing, but everyone loves pics around here. :p Today was mostly spent cleaning stuff to bolt on. A set of slightly used and free roller tip rockers.:D

Plus before and after on the intake. A whole can of oven cleaner in combo with Eagle 1 mag cleaner and a whole lot of scraping. It's almost there....

So even after all of the chemical warfare reaped upon this intake manifold, there were still pockets of serious resistance. So we escalated things to the sand blaster.

A little protection for sensitive areas.

The result after another Eagle one soak. Finally acceptable.
FYI for anyone cleaning aluminum, The 1-2 punch of oven cleaner and Eagle 1 mag cleaner does a really good job. Got the mag cleaner tip from some hot rod site. (Get the stuff not safe for clear coat)

Also for anyone that has never seen the bottom end of a SBC. New oil pump, pickup and filter adapter:D

$37 valve cover gaskets  If these things leak I'm writing my congressman!

Just about ready to go back in. While the anxious 40 waits in the background.

Cliff nice to see your still taking the time to do it right and not rush it

Thanks! Taking the time in bits and pieces as it comes. Finally making some forward steps again instead of back and sideways. Engine assembly always has me in slow motion. Constantly rechecking to make sure I didn't forget something.

Today's progress:
Remember this thing from somewhere around page 3? The trans is finally reunited with it's long lost brother the bell housing. Soon to meet up with their cousins the Xfer case and engine. Getting ready for a coat of paint.

And catching up on painting an array of home fab bits....

Got the junk yard serpentine accessory brackets cleaned up in the big blaster at work. Much quicker and more effective than mine. Still sand blasting is not an ergonomic activity:p My back hurts :crybaby:

Now the question is....

Paint em?

Or Leave em raw?

Opinions?
