Have to say, that is one damn fine 1st Gen 4Runner. I had an 87 as my first vehicle and that thing was amazing. I’ve been spying on one for the last 3 years and it hasn’t moved, I’m preparing to make my move on it. Love my 100 series, but nothing like a 1st Gen Runner. I see yours is an early solid model too, mine was not.

Thank you, Mine is an 87. Lots of hours wrenching on it. I pulled a front axle off a junked 81 pickup and rebuilt/trussed it, used the new front springs that Sky came out with, here’s a better shot of the front end I did

. It’s a killer rig but I’m not very unhappy with the Detroit truetrac up front, I’ll be pulling both detroits and going selectables instead.

Past experience with a 5VZFE refresh had me pull the oil cooler and replace all o-rings and related hoses. I figured if I'm going to that much trouble, I want to set it up for another 20 years.

5VZ-FE V6 is awesome.. love it.. and its simple for the most part to work on. Not that the 2VU-FE is bad...have both...errr should I say I also have the 3UR-FE and love them all.

Got some paint and clear on the rusty spot under that garnish piece. The new piece will arrive this week. There’s obviously some spots were the paint was pitted but it will be covered so I’m ok with it. Fixed the windshield wiper, the new linkage came in yesterday. Still need a few clips for the cowl cover (on the way). Also did a trivial cleaning on the springs that open/close the cup holder cover because it didn’t work. Years of coffee gunked everything up. Good man using a Vessel JIS driver. Toyota Trucks of Arkansas (FB Group) gives away a set of #1, #2, and #2 short each month to the most active member. You might be a member already.

Not a lot to report. Still waiting on control arms to come in. I replaced the corroded out battery hold down, replaced some burned out bulbs in various switches, finished mounting the new steering rack, and slapped on one side of the front sway bar. I’ve got new shocks on hand also to replace these worn out fox 2.0’s.

It was a day full of wrenching for me, my DD is a joop JT, for those of you that will want to flame me just be aware that I did heavily compare it to a tacoma but ultimately the joop has straight axles, fr/rr lockers, 7500lb towing, more horse power and fits 35s off the lot (I just like 4 wheelin’ I don’t really discriminate lol).. anyways I put an AEV intake and mopar trailer brake controller on it first thing this morning. Then moved to the 100 and Laid on my back for a while today New driver side Upper and lower control arms on, tbar on, and diff bushing replaced. I’m putting way more work into this front end that I wanted to, but it should last a while after all this. I have inner axle seals on order and I need to rebuild the CV axles, I have oem rebuild kits in hand just need to work the nerve. Enjoy some pics, or don’t lol.

Also decided to replace front and rear hood/hatch lifters because mine were shot. I used the ones from cruiser corps, probably chinese, but they work fine. Half the cost of oem.

I think it will drive like a new truck when you are done. It will perform well on a long trip to Colorado.

I got the oil filter cooler doodad remounted today with the new figure eight oring, was a giant pain in the dick . Also got new driver side inner oil seal replaced. I’ve decided not to rebuild my axle, because I found out it’s a Napa axle. I’ll go buy a new oem one tomorrow. Then I should be able to finally button up the drive side, I thought I was going to have to reindex the tbar but it’s off by the same tooth count at both ends lol it’s a small victory.

Well I started tearing into the passenger side, I have the driver side complete at this point, and I realized I made a small mistake. I did not install the “bushing spacer” on the number 2 bushing at the LCA. I do not plan on removing the lower control arm, again, and pressing out the new bushing to install this spacer. Yes, this annoys me, and I know it’s not the right answer but if you haven’t replaced that bushing yourself just keep quiet lol. I’ll report if it comes back to bite me in a drastic way. I’m also a little concerned at how much thread engagement I have on the tie rod end. Doesn’t seem like I have enough, but then again all I can base off of is the after markets ones I had before. Which don’t even have the same length of threaded portion to work with. The steering wheel is centered and the rack is also, so I’m not sure why so much thread is still showing on the ITR. Any input from the peanut gallery? Behold my piss sample bottle of bearing grease i ram through on the driver side.

New OEM

Great thread, I love seeing old Hundys getting rehab'd with OEM parts. Plus you helped me spend $230 on a new wiper linkage assembly; McGeorge Toyota thanks you.

ok guys so ive been reading and searching for posts with people talking about the LCA rear bushing spacer, not much out there. but its looks like some trucks come factory with more than one spacer, which leads me to believe that it is more of a shim. basically to account for any manufacturing variance in the rubber on the bushings, they used spacers from factory to take stress off of the bushing, in case the control arm was pressing the rubber too far one way or another. so, the lack of my single spacer will be fine, however, the bushing i just put in MAY not last as long as the other one did (which was 300k miles might i add) but time will tell.

knocked out a good amount of work this afternoon. She will be back on the ground tomorrow, and hopefully off to alignment.

Well as always I ran into a snag getting it back on the ground today. The front diff arm bushings provided to be more of a pain than I expected. I called it quotes after messing with it for a while, I’ll need to take it to work and press it in Monday.

Well I had to to the bushing and brace to a machine shop to get it in ultimately. They couldn’t press it in without turning the bushing down on a lathe, or they would have broken the brace probably. Kind of a garbage fitting part but that’s what I get for not buying oem. It’s a bushing from cruiserteq btw. After purging the power steering system and changing the oil, I took her for alignment. Steering is nice and tight, a little heavy feeling but I believe it’s supposed to be with all new everything. I still have a small clunk on the passenger front end somewhere…which is very aggravating. I will triple check torque on everything this weekend. The only thing I havnt replaced is the passenger side 3rd member brace bushing. I ordered seat leathers from lseat. I need a driver headlamp, and I placed an order for the grill trim piece as well. Will go to dealership today and order rear brakes, rotors, and ebrake shoes. Also I need wheels, not sure what I’ll do yet.

Jumped under the truck after work today and swapped out the diff carrier bushing. Stuck a bottle jack under the pinion, pulled the brace, wedged out the old bushing with two flatheads and a mallet. Used a dead low to smack the new one in, went in just fine. Tomorrow we will see if the last bit of clunk is gone when I hit a pothole on the way to work.

Had some energy last night and decided to tackle a little wiring mess. Whoever wired the bumper signals in did it a little too “shade tree” for my taste. I removed copious amounts of tape, vampire taps, and crimps to clean up the harness with a single Japanese 2 terminal plug, I keep these on hand because you never know. After getting the tape off I found some unused oem plugs that I assumed were for fog lamps. I put a meter on them and got 14ish volts with the fog switch on and got excited, I had a set of hella driving lamps on a shelf and decided to wire them in. Anyways you can see the before wiring and what I finished with, along with some sweet new driving lamps.

I'm pretty sure cruiserteq/cruiser outfitters bushing kit is OEM. I can look at my kit for part numbers. Good work on all of this!
