Hi guys:

Call me a Moab Wanna Be, or a Moab Newb. New-Ab? Never been there.

I wanna do Cruise Moab one of these years, but unfortunately this won't be the year. I am, however, really enjoying reading your thread. Keep the posts coming, and go heavy on the pics. For me, it is sort of Armchair Moab or Virtual Moab.

I have wondered how my truck ('89 FJ62) would do down there. I have it in pretty good shape, but the only significant mod is OME heavy/heavy springs. I put 33's on it, but they are not agressive tread tires. I suppose I could do a trail up to about 3 or 4 on the 1-to-10 scale. I may have to use my stock Wrangler tires.

My rig will leak a drop or two of oil every now and then. Does an oil leak disqualify a rig from the trails? (That might be a don't ask / don't tell type of question!)

I need some new seats, new exhaust pipe from the muffler back, and I have to cure my front end wander before I could drive it down. Of course, I could trailer it down, too, I suppose.

Keeping it tech, is there a Moab essential-to-bring list posted somewhere?

I am considering setting a firm goal to do Cruise Moab 2010. If not with this rig, maybe I'll buy a dedicated Moab rig.

Thanks.

First off, you should go, its a blast to be around so many Toyotas in an otherwise jeep dominated realm. The sights alone make it worth it. A good thing to do would be to visit Rising Sun's Website for the specifics on the event (reqiurements and such) There should be no visible "spotting" (leaking) hitting the ground during inspection. A 62 w/ an automatic and oversized tires w/o gear change would limit you a bit but there are tons of trails that would be fun/challenging that you could still do. See if you can youtube Fins & Things...

It's really just as much about the comradery and being immursed in Cruiserdom.

Immersed in Cruiserdom! I love it! I'd love to be there and see the trucks, meet some folks, look under some trucks and see how they are set up, and get some education. Coffee and doughnuts on a sunny Moab morning would be great, too.

I'm going to lay low this year. I'll spend some time between now and Cruise Moab 2010 getting better prepared and educated. I hate the thought of running down there unprepared and being a burden on everyone when things go wrong.

As an example of things I need to know: Do all participants have their trucks equipped with a winch? Most? Half? 1 in 10? Seems to me that a truck that is winchless and stuck is a drag on the group. Is that a problem down there? Do people grumble about having to help the unprepared? Or are the folks that have winches happy to help? I know there is a fair bit of parts sharing that goes on, but I chalk that up to no one being reasonably able to anticipate all the spare parts you might need.

I don't mind being a newbie in need of experience; I'd just hate to be an ignoramous that would ruin anyone else's trip.

well got another box today. I ordered 27 spline longfields with hubgears and they shipped 30 spline. Which is fine by me.

You guys are starting to make me nervous. I'm going to be running 33's, lifted, stock open 3.73's. I've done some wheeling in Moab in the past but nothing real tough because the wife and I were out there alone in the middle of June. I'll try everything, as long as there are some built rigs to help me if needed.

Can't wait!! Anybody wanna meet up on I-70 in western CO for a Cruiser Convoy to Moab?

Trapper,

Here's what they say. Rear locker is recommended.

Gold Bar Rim
Poison Spider Mesa
Wipe Out Hill
Road surfaces are rutted, rocky and sandy with steps not exceeding 14", with considerable slickrock surfaces. Water not exceeding 12" with some mud possible. Good vehicle approach and departure angles are helpful. Tall tires (33" plus) and traction added device (lockers, limited slips) is recommended. Above average driving skills are desirable.
Intermediate
33"
Rear locker recommended

I can't change it now so it's all or nothing. We'll see. My bro took a grand cherokee with a small lift on these with no prob.

I'll just have to put the old 60 to the test.

Sounds like you should be able to do it. Afraid of body damage??:hillbilly::hillbilly:

My fj62 is currently living in Moab (At my folks house). It has only the OME medium-heavy suspension and a rebuilt front end. It has almost done kane creek.

That said, it can do 80% of Moab stock. The beauty alone is worth it.

I took the ARB and Detroit out of my fj-40 (one tone swap soon) and I will soon put them in my 62, it should improve.

Go, I can't because I have to work and my wife cannot and will not miss school.

Body damage doesn't really bother me. The rust has doubled in size during the last couple of years. At least the Moab damage will be for a reason.

Yeah, that was my reasoning when I hit up Rausch Creek this past summer. Now the rust is even worse, which is giving me the itch to start cutting :hillbilly:

Make sure to post up pictures!!

If you need to take a strap or a winch rope on any given run, then you are just making someone else's day for being able to help you out. Now, if your truck is breaking down every so often because you didn't take the time to do some pre-Moab maintenance, then you will possibly get the fisheye from others in your group. You can't always know you and your truck's abilities before any given run, Moab or not, but if you have doubts as to if your truck needs new front axle bearings or a new clutch, etc. and you still choose to do a run that may break your truck, then you, imo, are taking risks that affect more than just your day on the trail. Be at least mechanically prepared and no one should give you a hard time about whether you should be on a particular trail or not.

I am only going to be running 33s and 3.7s but I had planned on doing all of this any way even if i wasn't going to moab. It just gives me a excuse to tell the lady I have to have the stuff now :) I plan on getting a set of beadlocks with 35s for trails that i can swap between my two rigs but thats a long long way down the road.

I would get a aussie and throw it in the rear at least to take some of your worries away.

It is mechanically ready. New Centerforce dual friction clutch, brakes, tune. It just turned 100k last week. Hugh at Safari-Ltd in Grand Junction has been helping greatly.

Here's the pic just before ODO turned over last week.

I'd show you an odo pic of my '88 - that's it in the avatar flopped on an easy part of Moab Rim in 2006, hey, stuff happens! and it wasn't a mechanical failure - but I don't have one. It just turned 204,000 miles last week and I don't have any worries about it performing well at Cruise Moab this year. Going out there next week to pre-run some of the trails with the Rising Sun trail leaders.

I get it, I was just trying to agree with you on having a truck that is mechanically ready. Just thought some other cruiser guys would like the pic, not saying low miles will get me through the trails.

Mine almost went over in my avatar. Since your with Rising Sun here in CO, you should try Derby Mesa it's a blast!

Here, Here...couldn't have said it better, I would add that it's not polite to try a section 5 or 6 times if you aren't getting it. 2 or at most 3 then bypass if possible. (when a tug up isn't an option)

Hey I know Hugh, hung out with him last year and did a scenic run out by Gemini Bridges/Horsethief, He's Good Peeps
