Gear selector display light went out, how to check bulb?

I received these today, tried the 3-bulb one and the letters were quite bright, very vivid. Thought it was a little too much. I tried the single bulb one and I like that one a lot better. Still a crisp clean light compared to an older incandescent, but not overpowering bright.. just enough to see what's down there.

I'm going to run with the 1 | 74-xHP: Wedge Base LED Bulb | $ 2.49 Cool White for a while.

Howdy boys...first post OTB. Found y'all a while back and looks like my kindof place. On my 3rd LX470 ('02, '05, and now '04). Love these trucks. Also spend a lot of time on my bimmer board as I also have a '99 E39 wagon but I digress. Posting here to request help removing the gear shift cover so I can replace the selector bulb. I followed the recommendations itt but aren't having any success and obviously don't want to break a plastic part by applying too much force. Also looked on youtube but didn't find anything relevant. Can someone chime in? TIA!

I think the cup holder pulls out vertically first. Then pull up on the center trim piece. You may need a plastic trim tool or wrapped screwdriver to get it started. If I recall, there are tension clips on the outer edges of the trim. Of course, don't pry with excessive force if it's not moving.

I'll give it another shot but there must be a trick to removing the cup holders b/c they didn't budge last time. Need a video!

I finally got around to completing this job over the weekend. Turns out that removing the plastic cover/cup holders wasn't that hard at all. As recommended in previous posts, move the transfer knob to Low and gear shifter to Drive and pry up until the clips along the perimeter disengage. I used the gear selector cutout area to lift with one hand and cupholder area with the second hand until I could fit my fingers under the edges. The 4 electrical connectors unsnapped easily and replacing the gear indicator bulb was a breeze once the cover was out of the way. Note to anyone trying change the bulb in the future; you must remove the entire cover to access the bulb. I kept looking for ways to avoid unsnapping the connectors and removing the cover to remove/replace the bulb but finally realized it is impossible.

Hey All,

This thread was super helpful, but I also could have used a picture or two. So, I figure I would throw these in. 1  job and took about 15 minutes. Most of that time with just figuring out how to initially get the console up.

Console Popped up: (Like someone said earlier, put drive in Low and Gear in N or D and it makes it a lot easier to give yourself room to work once it's leaned up.

Pull old out, put new in: (I pulled the green rubber off the old light and put it on mine, but I may remove it next time I am in there for a "whiter light". The green looks dated to me.

Mine recently went out and I need to do this as well. Which part are you referring to that requires me to rotate counter clockwise? You pointed to two different places..

My bad, made in haste and guess I missed that. The mechanism with the two green wires that I have the red arrow pointing towards. Just turn a quarter of a turn and it should pop out.

Edit: I cleaned up the photo.

Thanks for the pictures - makes the words much easier to understand.
The light on our LX was burned out when we go her. It will be nice to fix that...

FYI, if any of you find locating the OEM bulb (Part# 90981-11018), maybe hate going to dealers and/or need instant gratification, Sylvania 2721 is carried by most auto parts stores and is an appropriate replacement. Of course, the cool kids have already weighed in pretty thoroughly on the #74 LED options...
Thanks for this thread. I need to go pick up a "Position Indicator bulb" part number 90981-11018.

Does anyone know the name / part number of the insulation pad near the HNL switch? My car is missing it, and thought it would be a good idea to install it..

Awesome! Thank you very much!

Hey guys just picked up an 02 LX470 and i'm starting to fix the little annoyances. First time posting but I've been reading for a bit. I'm dealing with the same shifter lighting issue but it's not the bulb. I've changed it with a #74 sylvania and no luck. The other items on the console are lighting up i.e. seat heater lights, AHC/suspension lighting. Hoping someone has some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

You can “steal” the power from the seat heater bulbs wire (for example), if all else fails. There are these crimp on wire type connectors, so you don’t even have to solder.

Thanks for the idea. I'll give it a shot.

Quick update the #74 bulb wasn't making contact with the socket. After checking the wires and the harness everything was getting power. Twisted the bulb pins to the side of the bulb and everything worked. Thanks
