What is the function of the fuel separator, and can it be bypassed?

I have no emissions issues, as I am registered as a classic vehicle.

It leaks like a sieve when I am filling the gas tank. What does it do, anyway?
Separates the liquid from the vapor, are you sure fuel Vapor separator is bad and not just one of the rubber lines leaking
If you have an earlier model, then you'll have two of those, one on each side, behind the cargo panels. Really should keep them and a charcoal canister to control the gas fumes.

It's a 74, and right near the fill pipe.
let me echo the question about verifying it wasn't a hose...are you sure it isn't a rubber hose? If it is the vapor can, just about any vapor can can be modified to work. there is also a check valve there that could be cracked, so narrow down where your leak comes from. As others have stated and I have experienced, you don't want to bypass that or the charcoal can; and it has nothing to do with the environment, and has everything to do with immediate personal comfort...unless you like huffing...

Is this connected to the carb in any way?
Yes, it runs up to the Char. can then to carb. Mine goes from can to the air cleaner ( no carb ).

Pull the cargo panel, there might be a plastic valve (#40 in above picture) that has cracked and is letting vapors inside the vehicle. I replaced mine with a barb fitting.
You mean gas leaks when you are tanking up? That is not the separator, might be your over-flow hose?
