if you remove the bottom reinstall it before putting the knuckle back on, it makes it a lot easier to reassemble buy your self. also use lock-tite.

The shims I referred to are between your arms that you removed and the knuckle. They are little metal shims of different thickness added together. I just removed 20 thousands yesterday as I rebuilt mine and I ended up with 10lbs of knuckle tension. Good enough for me

FYI The shims on the bottom center the knuckle to the housing, and the shims on top set the preload on the bearings.

Thanks guys.
Found those pesky shims afterall. Just had to clean 28 years worth of dirt and grease off.
Got passenger side done and would have to say the worst of it was cleaning before reassembly. Oh, and setting those inner/outer races with a jumbo brass punch. Read somewhere that dry ice and rubbing alcohol can freeze to minus 60 degrees. Might have to give that a try for the other side.
Anyone know about what a mechanics shop charges to press the races in the spindle?

Probably about 1/3 the price of a cheap harbor freight press...
I would guess around $50 for 4 races, but it depends on where you are.
Are you talking about the brass bushing? I used a vice, I think. Either that or a BFH.
i used the old race a brass punch and a bfh to drive my new ones in, it was not that bad, i tapped it in moving around the race.
I always use the old race as far as the brass piece goes I use a vise and a piece of wood.hense you dont want the brass buggered up
