Front Axle Hub Flange backlash?

The clunk is still there after I changed the flanges and bearings. Now I have purchased the outer shaft and thinking to replace one side.
Can you let me know your thoughts if the play is acceptable.
One video is for passenger side, another for driver and third is new outer shaft with old flange.

My though is to change driver side outer shaft.

I would say the amount of lash/play is normal for about 150K mile, w/new OEM hub flanges. It will take new OEM hub flange & outer axle, to get zero lash/play.

Thanks a lot. I will try to change the DS this weekend and see the difference.
I am also now looking into replacing rear control arms but don’t think they come into play while stopped unless I am wrong.

This is after I changed the outer shaft and tighten bearing nut to 45ft lbs. To be honest it seems similar. :)

Not bad! But more than new FDS (outer axle) And new OEM hub flange should be.

Here's both new:

Perhaps outer shaft was not that great. I don’t think flange would go bad in one week with old cv axle.
Maybe I should order complete cv for passenger side and see the difference.
I am bit puzzled to be honest and bit disappointed.

I think you might be having a fair bit of play on the front end apart from the FDS.

Not sure if that was the camera movement, but your TREs, tires and LBJ seemed wobbly. Might be worth checking out the health on those ball joints.
My 108K '00 looked similar to @2001LC 's 59K hundy in the shop in terms of front end play shifting between D & R, new TREs, steering rack, all 3 front diff bushing sets and FDS.

TRE definitely should be changed. Probably ball joints too since they never been changed but they look good and no play when moving by long 2x4 under the tire.
I will order TREs after I am done with valve covers.
This is never ending :) Preventive vs reactive.
I enjoy fixing it but I should drive more than fix :)
187k 23 year old - can’t complain at all.

I did manage to get a picture of both vehicle's axle, but without measurements of the aftermarket front drive shaft axle.

PS of axle with old flange & axle looked pretty good for 165K miles on my all factory LC.

DS of after market axle with new OEM flange. This axle had the old flange that looked unusually worn pictured earlier in this thread.

These are great data points for future reference, thanks so much for taking the time to share your hard work. Time has passed do you have any thoughts on your original diagnosis?

Not really.

A new OEM FDS & hub flange will have zero rotational play (backlash). With miles we'll see some, as splines wear (break-in). How well wheel bearings are serviced, is key to reduce wear of splines.

Expound on how servicing bearings decrease wear on axle splines? Thanks

I have, many times in mud. Which I'll do again for you:

As wheel bearing loosen, they chatter (vibrate). The chatter result in scoring (eating into) of claw washer. This result in wheel bearings loosening even more rapidly and they'll get much looser. Chatter increases due to increased loosens. This vibration transfer from hub through hub flange into axle. The axle is moving inward and outward the distance of the snap ring to hub flange gap (spec less than 0.20mm). The axle becomes a power saw, as it moves in & out while hub vibrates. Now toss in excessive snap ring gap, which is rarely properly set even by the best of shops. The sawing action (distance traveled inward & outward) increases. If snap ring has been reused (should never be, but almost always is) they lose clamping force (expand). They'll then ride loose on axle. Add all this up a we get a post; MY Front Diff blew. TM will say: Check your C-clip (AKA snap ring).

Proper wheel bearing service. Is keep bearings, snap ring on axle and snap ring to hub flange gap all tight.

Sorry to put you out but I appreciate it. I have original rear bearings and I know at least DS front bearings on one of my 2000 LXs. Never an issue or need to change them....so far with 410k miles. Wonder how that happened?

So far I have never seen a 4x4 toyota rear axle bearing holding this good even with 250K miles (400K Km) on my LC 2000. All 4x4 toy's I have including the hilux had its rear axle bearings done around 200 K miles. I am not shocked to hear you are at 400K miles on original axle bearings, mine at 250K miles still spins like new. Oh.. my 92 Corolla/Prizm at 289K miles still got OEM wheel beaings and absolutely no play. Front bearings on the hilux and LC 200 (which has same setup) are still factory, just grease them and use proper method to tighten those lock nuts and locking washer (one tab inwards and one tab outwards)
