Fried Light Switch?

Glad you mentioned your issue Redcruiser, my dash light adjustment has been funky for awhile now. I'm gonna try some contact cleaner and air in there. Is your reostat in the same location, that your problem? I'll let you know if my fix helps. Looking around, I don't see any small lights in the gizmo guys, clue me in as to where they would be located?

Inside the pull handle itself...just inside the part that says "LIGHTS". Cardinal Fang did a write-up of it eons ago...even had the part number for the bulb.

Fixed it!

Ya, did the contact cleaner and air thing (battery unhooked, older, wiser?). Squirted it right in there, all over the coil and cotact, aired it dry. Worked great, that weird scratchy resistance when you rotate the knob, gone. Jumpy, poor dimming of the dash lights, gone. I wonder if ther is some way that you can take it apart Red Cruiser. Bet that if you can remove the carbon build up it will work. That is if doing what I did doesn't do it.

Yours is exactly the same as mine. I suspect my rheostat glowing broke a connection but will have to take a closer look when I have time.

Right now I'm about to make an offer on a house which means I'll have a garage. That's more exciting than buying the pig, well almost as exciting. ;)

Reostat only controls dash lights. If you don't have any then I would think you could clip the reostat out. But that is just a guess.

What 55 came without dash lights?

Don't know but that switch above is the later model lighted switch. It is not 70 and below for sure. Guess it goes to show a lot of substitutions work just fine. I thought they would all have "lighted dashes" with dimmer capacity on the instruments panel.

It seems correct for the 74 but not 71 down. Most of the later are lighted but there were some with the similar construction as the lighted...just no light through the knob.

your bulb is here. (red circle)

chris, if you have the same switch, yours has been changed. this switch came about somewhere around 74, so it's probably from the vehicle that your frame came from. before then, they were unlighted and looked more like the ccot switch

Cool, another dangling wire identified, thanks Ige. It looks like I have the 77 frame, firewall and dash.

Happen to have a spare switch Ige?

wish i did...mine's "gooey". i've tried pulling it out and cleaning it real well, helped a bit, but not enough.

Can someone tell mw which wire off the switch goes to the dash lights? I can't read it in my FSM. :frown:

According to my FSM it's the "Pl" wire. The plug should have a row of 3 spades and a row of two. The "PL" is the center in the row of three spades. You should be able to confirm it by turning the switch and seeing the resistance change between terminal "PL" and terminal "TL".

Thank you! Hope to find time to get to it tomorrow.
