Here is mine Kenwood DDX7019 with garmin NAV that accepts sd cards to add more maps. Works great and is also DVD/CD stereo & accepts USB drives.

I love it!

Another vote for the Garmin 2610 and at the current price its hard to beat. Comes with touch screen and wireless remote. Available on Ebay for $215 with full warranty and 2008 City Navigator (2008 City Navigator alone is over $100). Uses cheap CF memory cards, the biggest plus over most Garmin units. It only holds 2025 maps at one time. So the entire TOPO of the US will not fit. So multiple cards are needed. I have the entire US, Baja Nor, and Baja Sur on TOPO available with just the change of a card.

Caution a lot of the newer GPS's (TomTom, Nuvi) dont have track logs a must on any offroad GPS.

I thought you had a good one. Are you upgrading?

I'm sold on Garmins.

A Nuvi 660 for address finding and route calculation combined with old fashioned paper Topo maps of the area.
The topo map nicely folded and mounted fully readable on the steering wheel.

When out on the trail an Etrex Venture for simple tracking ability and a walk around.

Dell Axim PocketPC and Sirf BT-338 GPS. Cit Navigator for on road and Memory-map for off road use. Multifunction unit that also acts as an MP3 player. Can surf the internet and e-mail in hot spots (built-in wifi). can watch movies on (DVDs can be shrunk to 500MB). Currently have an 8GB CF and a 4GB SD card installed as extra memory, but can go higher on the CF to 16GB.

Spending the extra $$ to get the mount specific to the truck and unit is worth it.

Garmin 376C- XM weather and XM radio are a nice touch. Having near real time radar overlay on the map along with detailed forecasts etc is a nice feature, especially when visiting areas with unpredictable weather. If you enter an area with a wx warning, it will tell you and display a red box around the warning area. The radar overlays w/fronts and isobar is better than having the weather channel dude riding shotgun.
For topo, I run a Garmin 176C for the large display. On foot, Rinos for the locator function-

Well it may be a 4Runner, but I currently have a Garmin StreetPilot III. I'll be adding a Pocket PC similar to Romer's set-up shortly.

No pics, but the Garmin Quest is an outstanding compromise. It has voice nav, but you can also take it out of the vehicle--20hr battery life. compact, with a very readable screen.

The downside is the limited memory, (but I understand that the quest II addresses this) and it isn't compatible with the TOPO! software. It will do garmin topo stuff though.

Garmin 276C...can load tops also has voice guidance and it's marine compatible. Highly recommend it.

Another vote for the 276C if you need something to use offroad (and on road). I love mine If you're not headed off road there are far cheaper and more user-friendly models.

The Quest series will handle Topo USA just fine. In order to see the maps you have to de-select your other auto-routing mapset, since the display defaults to that one instead of Topo.

Quest isn't a good choice for truck nav since the screen is TINY. I use Quest 1 on a dirt bike, and have ordered a refurb 2610 for $189 from eBay for the LX.

For you guys with Garmins mounted below the OH console, can you please elaborate on how you made a bracket and where it mounts?

I would like to put my new 2610 there... maybe. I need to be able to remove it so I can use it in other vehicles with the bean bag mount. Is that possible, or does it have to be hard-wired to the OH with a remote speaker?

Thanks.

This is how i have mine set up. The GPS is a bluetooth Garmin GPS 10. I taped cardboard to the pda cradle and drilled a hole through the back of the cubby hole. The cradle wedges in the cubby hole pretty tight and doesn't fall or move. Works pretty well for me.

I utilized a Ram mount but I have a Quest and III+. I bought the Ram mount that is designed to attach to boat rails. It is a T shaped designed with a U-bolt and the ball. I slid some vaccuum hose over the U-bolt so the U bolt would fit snugly around the rear view mirror stem that comes down from the OH console. Basically I sandwiched the rear view mirror mount between the U-bolt and the ball mount. I put the U-bolt as high on the stem as I could get it, very near the top of the windshield. I bought the two shortest RAM arms and a RAM GPS mount for my GPS. Then I just experimented and put it together. The display can be tough to see sometimes, but I think if I had a GPS with a bigger screen, this mounting idea would work fine.

Two GPS units. The in dash, street type which comes with the 100, and a Lowrance Global Map 100.

I am making the Lowrance more of a 'permanent fixture' in the Cruiser. I ordered up a RAM mount for it, and am installing a DGPS beacon antenna to work with the Lowrance for even better accuracy. So I will have the Lowrance in it's cradle, with external EA-3 antenna plugged into unit, and DGPS beacon receiver plugged into the unit, which also feeds a +12V supply as well.

Will post pictures as soon as I begin the project. I am just waiting on the cradle, the external antenna, and the shakespeare DGPS antenna to screw into the beacon.
