I'm beginning to think the 4spd will work fine. I 'm thinking the 5spd is more trouble than it's worth unless i get lucky and stumble into one.

Thanks for the info.

1978 FJ40 FOR SALE-Almost like NEW!!!

1978 FJ40...$21,000

A quick note...I am selling my mostly ORIGINAL 1978 FJ40. I will post a couple of pics to get the word out, but will probably list it on ebay in the next few days. I bought from the original owner, I have the original WINDOW STICKER, and receipt from the check used to purchase the truck in S. California. All maintenance records from brand new.

Brief history...Truck was purchased new in S CAL, in late '77 by a gentleman. He either gave or bequeathed the truck to a family friend here in Seattle, who I bought it from (So, technically I am the 3rd owner I suppose). The FJ was in ORIGINAL cond, except for hole in rear fender for a CB antenna. I bought it for a 16th birthday gift for my son, so that he and I could "restore" it together...which we did.

Basically the truck was fine mechanically (87,000 miles) and had VERY MINIMAL RUST. So we decided to do a "cosmetic restoration". We totally stripped the body and interior, cut out several small rust spots (under front turn signals, along the rear sill) welded in new steel, and fixed the very few parking lot dings, and welded in the antenna hole. Painted with PPG single stage Dune Beige (original color).

We installed new SOR front seat covers and seat foams, have new headliner, all new emblems, new lights (not the cheap ones), etc, etc, etc. Tuffy center console, door panels, Toyota seat belts, all new weatherstripping.....

Mechanically...about the only things here, new ceramic (MAF, I think) header, partially desmogged, complete exhaust with new free-flow muffler.

The truck looks, literally, SHOWROOM condition (though remember we didnt do anything to the mechanicals except clean up the engine bay), or as close as a 30-yr old truck can, I think. It runs like a dream!!! And it sounds really nice.

The FJ has a Warn 8274 winch installed new at the dealer, as well as a rear aux gas tank.

I'm not about to give this FJ away, I expect to get a premium price (low 20's), so only really seriously interested folks need apply! I realize that price range cuts out most folks, but the truck is probably worth it to somebody, guess we'll see, huh?

I have restored several vintage vehicles and dont cut corners, its well done and shows. Anyone interested, please call me to discuss the FJ. I expect it will be on ebay by Sunday or so, and I will throw together a website documenting the restoration. I have around 100 pictures of the stripdown and rebuild.

Summary...1978 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, 87000 miles, Dune Beige, beautiful condition!! I'll figure out an asking price by the time someone contacts me.

Oh...why selling? My son's wallet was being slaughtered by the gas expense, and so we found him a nice 78 Datsun 280Z! Actually, he's happier, and I cant blame him really!!!! Lucky 16 yr old!!!

ps...Land Pimp has seen the truck and probably could drop by and offer his opinion if you ask him...

Great looking 40.

As part of the forum rules you'll need to post a price when listing a vehicle for sale.

Thanks for your help and good luck!

Low 20’s might be realistic for a non-modified truck that appears to be as clean as what you have posted. The fact that you have removed emissions equipment may end up hurting you, as the vehicle is no longer stock and unmolested, and could prove to be a big negative for some prospective customers, as they may be required to have a fully functioning, no matter how prehistoric, emissions system in order to get the vehicle registered and licensed in their area.

Good luck!

Price

OOPS, Sorry guys!!

OK, $21,000..takes care of that, since I had to come up with a number:) !!!

Smog....ALL ORIGINAL SMOG EQUIP IS INTACT....just in a box in my garage!!! I never had a smog test done, as we're exempt out here, but as original as the truck is (was), I would assume it was functional...ASSUME, I said, but I have every piece and it was all carefully removed for the VERY REASON as to accomodate a future sale.

Hope this doesnt scare anyone off, but trust me, I do understand..

Most all of my pics are too big to post here (around 300kb, but I can email them direct)

Sorry again about neglecting the price thang..

I just posted a thread on the 60 forum. A guy in colorado has a 60 with a blown engine. It was posted on ebay but didnt meet his reserve. I spoke with him and he wanted 3k, he said he would work with me though, Let me know if you want his email or phone number.

Maybe someone will want to trade for a 60?

I'd love to get rid of this car. If the price is too high, make an offer.
