Just buy a roll of 3M foam tape. I've used this for both the Inspection cover and trans hump.

works well, and cheap, too

never had or needed one in owning FJ40's since the early 80's.

x2 Never on any Chevy's I've owned either. The two bolts that go into the front, as opposed to up from the bottom, would have a hard time fitting if there was a significant gasket.

2 ways to look at this. The gasket will keep stuff out or in. If you have a leaky rear engine seal then the oil will drip out on the ground without a gasket and this is something you want to know. With a gasket you would have a build up of oil and metal grindings from your starter, flywheel, clutch. This could get your clutch oily wet. I say No gasket.

stock had one so it makes sense to replace it? i just used 3m sealant tape also from ACE hardware. as said above you don't realllly need one.

I cut the foam between the bolts as a vibration inhibitor. If your rear main is leaking, where is that oil going to go?

To the BOTTOM of the inspection plate, away from the gasket surface, but mysteriously close to that little hard plastic plug in the bottom/middle, which always seems to have 1/2 of the lip broken off, allowing fluid to leak out.

And if you have metal grindings from your starter, flywheel and clutch that are plentiful, I think you have bigger fish to fry.

Not lookin' to start any crap, just sayin'

My 12/1979 Had these on there. They are somewhere in the bottom of my parts cleaner now. There was grease and tar on everything inside the cover FWIW.
