This sounds like a good plan!!

Is this yourCad model?

Hi All:

ngumali, my point is that with this short-term plan you could take the truck on comps this year, and see how it does, then have a better idea of what modifications are needed for better performance in next year's comp season.

Otherwise, you are just throwing a bunch of money at the truck, for modifications that may, or may not improve off-road performance.

Just my "2 cents" (aka opinion.)

Good luck!

Alan

Thanks Alan, I'm not yet having a pleasure to meet Mustard40. As for your suggestion to mod my truck, I don't think suitable for competition but recreational offroad trips only. I want more hard-core mods :D

Looking around for 5VZ-FE engine to swap the 3F, sounds like I cannot keep the FJ70 transmission. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. And how about the transfer case? Thanks

thats too bad, those trans are about the best Toyota makes ... in my books.

Yes that's too bad, I agreed. Toyota series 40 and 70 are rarely seen in my country, most of these cars either out of service or collectible. In Vietnam, you cannot buy parts to build a car, so one must get a cheap car to modify from there (not really cheap with 200% imported tax policy, that old and dirty 1986 FJ70 costs me $6K). As we are looking forward to participating in one of the toughest local competition, I have no choice but swap the engine and the transmission as well.

i think i would have started with a ragtop 70, pre90. full size diffs front and rear, nice weight saving with the top half of the doors removed, top off glass out, interior panels removed and replaced with light gauge aluminum, double motor 8275, lunchbox lockers with 4.11 diffs, 2.48 t/case, swapped in HJ turbo with propane injection, h55F, mild life and skinny muds.
that would make for a light, fast, reliable rig.
screw the intercooler since you won't be moving fast enough anyway and it will collect mud like a pig collect s***.
a bug screen that is easily removed placed in front of the rad to keep the mud out. once you stop, pull out, shake, reinstall.
snorkel for the water crossings

it seems in 2014, i will be building a rig similar for a customer so a bit of thought has gone into it.

This is a pre-1990 - the VIN lists it as a 09/1988.

It has an H41 transmission which is a great choice. Strong, simple, short length for the longest driveshaft in the rear.

There are low range gearing options for these transfer cases if you need them - starting at 2.8:1, then 3.05:1 and then 4:1.

Someone mentioned changing the wheelbase - in all the wheeling I've done - and there's a lot of it - the wheelbases around 100" were the best overall. Too short is less stable, too long and it hangs up. A 40 or 70 series is about 90" or so, a 73 or 74 series is about 10" longer and quite a bit more stable. If you're running high speeds, I'd suggest about a 110' - 112" wheel base with wider axles, but it gets too long for tight-in work.

The 9.5" front end is a great choice. Stick with it, and reinforce the housing.

Add Longfield super axles or the JT's Differential offerings.

Keep your lift moderate, and run as large tires as is permitted.

For lockers, I'd suggest the TJM units. Less leak prone than ARB.

Install a strong external cage and protection bars if allowed, and an internal cage if required.

Put on the fastest, strongest, most reliable winch you can find. Perhaps a dual motor 8274 (Gigglepin).

Hi all and it's me again. The oldie FJ is currently being remove into pieces for mods works, not much for photo. As previous mentioned, she will be swapped with 5VZ-FE engine (from Tacoma truck), 35" super swamper tires, VX80 axles with ARB air-locker. Appreciate any gearing ratio recommendation for both transfer case & axles. She will compete mostly in mud terrain and sand terrain of tropical forests.

Already got a Gigglepin twin-motor in front :o

That is a seriously beautiful winch!

What transmission are you going to choose for the BJ, or are you going to have an adapter made up to fit it to the stock transmission?

Gear ratios depend on what axle gears you want to run and which transfer case you end up choosing. If you stick with the stock 'split case' transfer case then you have a few low gearing options to choose from - either Mark's 4WD in Australia or Advance Adapters in the USA.

4.88 nitro gears, nitro chromoly birfield kit, nitro chromoly rear axles, solid spacers, and arb or tjm lockers. 4:1 tcase gears. This is what ill be doing on mine.

OP plays in the mud, he needs tire spin not rock crawling grunt gearing. 4-1 tcase gears would be a waste of money for his application.

I like the idea of using the axes of 80, it will gain greater articulation, the reduction we use here in Venezuela for the axes are 4.88, since 4.56 is very weak in the front, with this reduction can get more out of transmission, not like the toyota v8 but everyone with your taste, here to give you the best engine is the 1FZ punishment, but again it is easier to get into the market is the best engine!!
