Call me weird, call me a nut.. i don't care.. but this video damn near brought a tear to me eye. To me its like putting a dog to sleep.. just sucks... this will be with me for the rest of the day.

:(

YouTube - Cash for Clunkers- 1989 Land Cruiser 77k miles

Poor LC ran for a heck of a long time too..

(Warning: A tad of foul language in the video which was totally understandable)

Im going to go take my 207k mileage 1993 clunker 80 for a drive now and tell it how much i love it.

That SUCKS! And it makes me sad too.
My wife is yelling in the other room right now "That is such a waste, There are so many people that need cars, and people that would love that truck" I agree with her.

Just another idiotic government give-away brought to you by the "room temperature IQ club" of DC. Another example of our "leaders" fine work.

Absolutely unbelievable. I got really depressed watching them destroy that nice 94 BMW 5-series. That sucker was really hard to kill.

You know, it seems to me that with just a little bit more thought, they could have come up with a better program.

How about giving the folks who traded in that FJ62 and BMW their $4500 toward a new car. Then how about finding a "REAL" clunker. You know, the one that leaves a puddle of oil/ATF/coolant underneath every night, and big cloud of smoke every time the gas pedal is touched? The one held together with duct tape and bailing wire? That one. Then give that guy the BMW and take his real clunker and crush it.

There. That idea took me about 20 seconds to come up with.

Wouldn't that be a better idea? That way, we get a real trash heap off the road, and give these perfectly serviceable used cars another few years of good service.

I'm pretty sure if I gave the idea 20 minutes of thought I might even come up with a better yet idea.

Of all the government waste out there, I'm sure this might be a small example, but it sure is a visible one. And since I really like cars so much, it's a painful one to watch.

I think nobody who came up with this plan actually thought through the true cost of what they are doing. The amount of energy and resources that go into the creation of a car is enormous, when everything is considered. I fail to see how this is really benefitting anyone (except car manufacturers, dealers. and finance companies), but I can sure see how it is hurting a lot of folks.

On the news here in SD last night they reported that the scrap yards are picking these cars up and putting them in their yards to sell parts. So I don't know why the different reports from the news and the Youtube videos? Either one is propaganda and the other is reality or they are both propaganda. :meh:

It was my understanding that they were being crushed after they blew up the engine and that people were pizzed because they weren't even recycling the parts. If they are putting the cars in junkyards then thats a little better than i first thought.. still sucks though.

This is foolish waste that we are all paying for, poorly thought through by our federal goverment. Cant you wait to see whats next from Washington! Mike

I think they have to be crushed as part of the program, I think?, I agree, this is a complete waste. Isn't this how we got into this problem in the first place? So, it's better to go into new car debt than to drive an older car that runs fine and simply needs a tune up. BS. I will take my sweet 80 anyday, don't give a fxxx about keeping up with the joneses...

That video makes me ill on so many levels. What a waste of a perfectly good engine (and car!)

I'm picking up a '90 that looks almost like that one on Thursday, same color and everthing. I could use the hood, DS mirror, center console, dash, driver seat... so many things that just go to waste.

At least I'll try to resurrect it's brother here pretty soon, now more than ever it's just to spite a ridiculous government sponsored huge obscene waste of resources. Unbelievable. Truly!

Does this make sense to anyone?

I mean I know what it's doing for new car sales and since I'm in the car biz I'm a little bit grateful for that, lord knows we need all the help we can get right now, but come on, can't we figure out something better than this? Holy crap!

At least I know what the engine will sound like before it grenades itself. Hope I never have to take it quite that far! 12 minutes on no oil. Impressive.

Dan.

I must be a glutton for punishment because I went back to youtube and watched pretty much all the videos that guy posted. He killed about 10 cars and put them all on youtube. He wasn't happy about any of them, he's totally disgusted with the whole damn thing, as am I.

I then went to our wonderful "representatives'" websites, Diane Fienstein and Barbara Boxer, and suggested that we should take true junk heaps off the road (true clunkers) and give those people these good cars they're destroying. That way a better, cleaner car is driving the streets and a true junkpile is crushed. That's the way the program should have been designed in the firstplace.

Think my letters wil make any difference?

Any wagers on how long It takes to get a reply (if ever)?

Here's Barbara Boxer's reply

"Dear Mr. Adams:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). I appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.

The CARS program, popularly known as "Cash for Clunkers," offers vouchers to prospective buyers toward the purchase of a new fuel-efficient vehicle, provided that the trade-in vehicle is scrapped. The program issues vouchers of $3,500 or $4,500, depending on the fuel economy and vehicle type of both the new vehicle and the vehicle to be disposed of.

As you may know, due to the overwhelming popularity of the CARS program, the initial funding of $1 billion was depleted in a matter of days. More than 250,000 cars and trucks have been sold as part of the program with an average increase of 10 miles per gallon. Seventy-five percent of all vehicles purchased through the CARS program have been made or assembled in America.

The CARS program has provided a much-needed economic boost to communities all across the country. Many dealers have reported selling more cars and trucks in one day than they had in an entire month before the CARS program. Consumers are driving away with new vehicles that use much less gas than their trade-ins.

On July 31, the House of Representatives voted to provide an additional $2 billion in funding for the CARS program on. The Senate approved this increase, which should provide funding for the CARS program through the autumn.

Thank you again for writing to me. Please feel free to contact me in the future about this or any other issue of concern to you.

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator"

Now gee, wasn't that nice of her to reply! And look how she took my question and directly answered it, eh? Great comments on my suggestion to improve this program.

What a friggin' joke!!

I've sent similar letters on other subjects to these buffoons we call politicians, and the reply above is pretty much the only reply you get.

Pretty much a total waste of time.

Our "representative" government at work, folks.

Like I said before, this country needs a revolution.

3FE POWA!:grinpimp::crybaby::censor: in that order

Say nothing important response. Mimi Walters, our south OC rep finally replied by letter, not email to my email on state park closures. Didn't say a damn thing useful either!!!
