under-hood clearance was extremely tight. after a lot of measuring and removing the insulation, we finally got the engine where it had enough clearance; 1/2" to the rib on the hood. wanted to keep the engine up as high as possible so we would'nt have to worry about oil pan to diff interferrance issues. it's tight on top and on the bottom but it'll work great. engine angle is excellent as well so oevrall i'm super happy with how this combo worked out.:wrench:

the hood actually closes without having a huge scoop on it! :grinpimp:

all the mounts are custom one-offs by don. he always uses suspension bushings in a dom sleeve so the mount is fully "captured". even if one of the bushings shuld wear out or fail, the assy will only be able to move about an inch. alignment is tight but the superrior fab work ensures that the install will go smooth and service-ability won't be an issue should it ever come into play.

if we had to remove the engine and geartrain combo, all we need to do is remove the 3 bolts going thru the mounts and the powertrain is ready to come out.

That canned ham is sweet, what is it off of?

What are you guys going to run for the radiator and fan setup?

NICE!!!!
Georg...what's the PN for that oil pan just out of curosity!
FC's sh*t is just INSANE!

Keith

Do you lose oil capacity using that pan? It looks sweet.

One of the sad things about the conversion is that with all that engine, with all that power, it will still get better mileage that tne original 2F.

Those mounts are insane.

George, what was the "major internal issue" that the first motor had? Frozen crank bearing or something?

i'd have to look it up again. you have to get the entire setup from a camaro or firebird. that includes:
oil pan
oil pan gasket
pickup tube
oil filter

right around $230 at the dealer iirc.

yup, the unfortunate side effect of this style pan is that you do loose about 1.5 quarts of oil capacity. it'll still hold quite a bit so we'll be fine.

the owner of the 60 had purchased the engine about a year ago and then it sat at his place and another shop for the swap. after 6 months at the other shop with no progress he decided to take the rig back home and then contacted me. meanwhile the engine had gotten some water into one of the cylinders where it built up a nice rust ring. on top of that there were a couple of cracks between 4 of the exhaust manifold bolt heads on the driver side. hard to see at first but they pretty much doomed the engine.

new one will be here today, out of an 06 silverado.

stock gm fan with an aluminum rad.the intercooler for the blower will be in front of the rad as well. :wrench:

i hate electric fans with a passion. :flipoff2:

Ok... post up some pics when you get there... I may be switching back to a mechanical fan at some point. Allready have a good aluminium radiator. I thought about running the stock fan and clutch off a 1999 GMC Yukon (same year of my engine) 5.7. Very tight clearance on my truck between the water pump and the radiator core ...

Do you need to get a different oil pick up, or will the original be okay?

i did another vortec swap in an soa 87 fj60 a while back; 2000 5.7 with an NV4500 and orion hd; stock fan. i installed a summit aluminum rad and even in summertime at 100 degs the truck runs at 180. that's without a shroud except for a "shield" at the top of the rad/fan for safety purposes. :steer:
