On my fj60, the rear C channel section of frame by the spare tire has swelling/corrosion on the inside and I'd like to weld some reinforcement in there. I've read all the threads I can find, now I'd like to hear some more ideas. Pics would be great. I'll try to get some pics of my own problem and post them. Thanks.

Ideas

There have been a couple of things posted. You can box the rear section, or replace the rear insert with some clean steel. Best thing to do is remove the rusted out area and replace it before the rust takes over the place.

You could do like this fellow member did. This is the approach I will be taking when I fix my rear frame rust issue. Have a local steel company bend you a piece of steel that will fit inside the frame rails.

it is after all, just metal, and you too can out think it.

it's just a frame, and it's just plain metal, nothing cool, nothing fancy, just steel.

No rust anymore on this picture, but you can imagine what it looked like before the previous owner started baking:bang:
By the way, the other side is worse, but have no pic at the moment.

Wow, I thought mine was bad! I'm wondering about boxing it in or replacing the inner piece. I was reading that if the need should arise you won't be able to replace your gas tank if you box it in because of clearance issues??? True??? Replacing the inner piece seems the best to me, but removing the old one looks tough with the rivets etc.
Been out beating on the 60 all day, replacing the suspension.

a good, sharp, cold chissel and hammer works, the same for an air chissel works better, 4.5" grinder with a 6" cutoff wheel works best.

the one thing you should see is, the channel is toast, but the actual section of frame is still in decent shape.

Its going to take a while any way you do it. To get the rivets out either grind or torch the heads off, then use a punch with a nice heavy hammer to drive em out. Its a pain in the balls especially if you have to do this all while laying on your back. (ask me how I know) But in the end you will have a nice cleaner looking frame that you know is much stronger. Just remember too if you weld metal back in not to have any vertical welds.

Hey guys, I am in the same boat as you are. I should at least, cut out the right inner frame rail, as the bottom and top have eaten though. BTW, can a steel company make a piece of steel that is shaped like a U and fit it where the inner frame rail would have been located? I reside south of Vancouver BC. It is my only mode of transportation.

I believe a forum sponsor is making a replacement inner channel piece, maybe trail tailor? Correct me if I'm wrong

removing the old channel was the hardest thing I have ever done on my cruiser….. but I bolted in a new one.
