Cool! If you're going to do that, I would get 2 sets of inner axles, the extra one is for spare...

Btw, I am not too sure about the custom poly performance chromoly axles, seems like they are not that stronger than stock.

I'm not yet convinced that I'm building it for my current rig. It's a project unto itself. The way the numbers are working out, it's a better fit in an fj60 if trying to use stock Toyota axle shafts. Fully custom axle shafts don't seem like a very good idea.

At the same time, they're not much more expensive either.

Same thing in my 1980 HJ45.
Just want to be sure .
This measurment is taken from the end of the splined section of the shaft to what, inner surface of the flange or outer surface of the flange?
The other question is are they the same for the 40?
Thanks...

I know the brake system changed in 8/80 on the 40 series full floater but SOR also lists different part numbers for the axle shafts also. Does anybody know what differents are?

Early one has the axle seal in the axle nut, later one has the axle seal in the spindle, because of that the seal surface on the inner axles have different ODs. But you can fit a later inner axle into an early FF by using a non Toyota aftermarket seal.

Thank you that explains a lot. Do you have a manufactor name and part number for the seal? Going to install a E laocker in my later FF which means I will have a spare short axle and if I pick up a long axle and right seal I could use them as trail spares for both. That is assuming the short spline axle can be use with a E laocker as a temp fix.

You don't happen to know how to ID a early FF. I know by doing a little research that when Toyota switched to disc brakes in the front they also switched the FF bearings to match the front bearings. My early FF has some monster brake drums. Like most this is one that came without the center diff so I plan on a rebuild with new seals and bearings before installing in my 45.

Thanks again. After the sixties I have very limited knowledge of later FJ40s. Even more so of non-USA cruisers.

I know the different between the early and late FF. It seems the bearings changed around 8/75 in the earlier style. Just wondering if there is a way to tell the difference. My early one has some heavy duty brake drums that have cooling fins. I believe in a earlier SOR catalog it showed heavy duty drums available in the FF. The brakes don't concern me. I figure I can just change to a lighter duty brake setup of the same time period. It's not clear on SOR site, did the front axle change to match the the FF bearings or did they both change in 8/75? I know if you know the date of a part it's easier to find the correct for it. Thanks for any help.

I have a set of axles that I believe came from a firetruck or something (they were painted red--and not just by a rattle can--and I don't know who would do that except a fire department), and they had the heavy brake drums. Here's the rear all finished:

The brake shoes are roughly a third again as wide as the standard 40 series brakes, and CDan can get them (also the wheel cylinders, etc...)

What's really interesting is that the front axle was matching--and had what I beleive is a later model housing. It has a different gusset (probably not the right term) between the U bolts than the other axles I've got (79+). Not real sure what the deal is, but I definitely have the hub nut seal FF rear

What's really funny is looking at that cut down 80 series axle: I wish I would have done that instead of my FF. I probably have about as much into mine as I would have had into one of those (because I'm of course anal retentive and bought new EVERYTHING), and yet I don't have a parking brake figured out yet--and with the swap to the 1HZ a parking brake on the axle would sure be a nice thing right now.... oh well....

Carry on....
