Recently decided to splurge and buy a CCOT center console and PVC floor mats. Going to install them and transfer case mat doesn’t fit at all and center console won’t let me shift into 2nd. After talking with them I discovered my shifter is sitting about 4” back from OEM?

Any insight into how this would’ve happened? Not the original owner and did a restoration. 78’ fj40 with 2F, 4 speed, and none of it was touched during restoration. Looking just to find out where something may have shifted or any insight. Including photos of distance from firewall (CCOT said stock shift boot is about 7” from firewall, mine is 11”) along with when it was torn apart during restoration. Frame is a verified 78.

just curious as to how this happened. Probably just going to fab something to get center console in.

Is the top on that transmission for an FJ40 or FJ60? They have different tops on the H42 and the FJ60 top sits back a few inches.

Your transmission and transfer case are both from a 81-84 FJ60 and your tunnel was modified to accomodate before your time.
This is good overall news for you as the transfer case is a substaintial upgrade over the earlier version. You can alleviete your transmission shifter issue by switching out your transmission top cover and shifter handle to the FJ40 version (from any 4-speed FJ40). It can easily be swapped in the vehicle.

Wow, never even knew that was something people swapped. I've also been trying to track down where the parking brake was on this and how to put on a new one. With the FJ60 having a rear axle mounted parking brake, and the 40 being transfer case mounted. How would you suggest going about installing a new one?

Valley Hybrids, and maybe some other vendors, can hook you up with the secret sauce to mount a drum ebrake to your split transfer case. I recommend a Tom Woods double cardan driveshaft which will be smooth as butter.

Check your current rear axle to see if it accommodates a later style cable actuated ebrake. If not, go with the drum in the back of the split case.

Don't forget the transfer case shifter. The two right are 8/80 later for the four speed on the 40 series.

Unfortunately your cut holes in your new floor mat. Both shifters are from an FJ60 that matches the transmission and transfer case. The boots look FJ40 for the transmission and FJ62 for transfer case. Opening on the transfer boot is too large for an FJ60. Row on the right are from the FJ62. Next to it are from FJ60s.

Not sure but think this shifter is from a 70 series.

The transfer case shifter location is the same so he doesn't need to worry about that, just the transmission shifter.. I just put later split cases and matching shifters into three seperate pre-80 40 sieres in the last two months and it worked out well.

That explains why you don't have a parking brake. I have the parts to add a parking brake to the back your transfer case (the simple/easy route), or a conversion kit to add the later rear drum brakes with integrated parking brake to your existing axle housing (a lot more work but a really big upgrade for both regular braking and emergecny brake performance).

Here is a 74-78 transmission cover.

The transfer shifter is forward of the correct transmission opening. Would need to compare a measure to where it bend to clear the bellhousing.

I installed same transmission and split case in my1975 with tuffy box and there FJ40 mount.I was able to remove shifter cane and put in vise and straighten bend out with out heat.Took some effort but do able.Little at a time reinstall.Took
me about three times to get it just right.I did put another FJ40 I have in First gear and measure to dash to have a reference.Good luck!

81-84 transfer linkage in a 78. It fits right in.
I promise.

Piece of the transfer shifter your showing is the same on the late 40 series and 60 series until the 3F bellhousing and H42 with the dummy spacer started.
Here are the early and late FJ60 inspection covers.

Relationship to the two shifters are about the same. Would still be interested in OP's measurements. Still have that blue transmission cover and at least one more in pile of transmission covers.

No, it’s not. It’s an 81-84 shifter that stands straight up.
I can see how the angle of the picture makes it look like it’s angled back.

Are you talking about the picture in post twelve? Is this the same cruiser as in the original post. That is the one I'm asking about the transfer opening. Transmission opening was definitely moved. Curious about the transfer opening.

I show three different thru the floor shifters used in the 8/80+ 40 series and early pre 3F bellhousing 60 series. 36321-60041 used in the FJ4X and BJ4X. 36321-60061 in the 60 series. Then 36321-60051 only used in the HJ47. Why the HJ47 is different not sure but it is. It's one of ones I pictured above and it is definitely different.
