Well folks, I could even touch this police car. Ok, not this KT872, but her twin sister KT873 (see the pic)!...
It happened during a high school trip from Athens, Greece to the Republic of Cyprus, back in April 1980.
Obviously it's a brand new late 1979 or early 1980 FJ40, replacing the ageing Series Land Rovers. No free wheeling hubs and probably no P/S. The tyres of this new Cruiser are not the typical Dunlop Road Track Major, so it could be the theme of a Mud research project.
As it is the case in the ex-British crown colonies, driving in Cyprus is "on the right side" of the road!

PS. This pic is taken with my humble Kodak Instamatic 76-X, bought with pocket money (for the equivalent of 33 USD in 1979). Wish I would have made more pics...
As the 40-Series has never been imported to Greece, it was the first time I could touch in person this legendary vehicle. Since then, at the age of 17, I got the bug...

Clearing out old recording I have scanned thru a 1969 film about then1967 Monterey Pop festival. Only thing of interest was this during a seventeen minute performance by Ravi Shankar at the end. Since it already had a CA plate would put this cruiser from mid sixties when the hard top change until some shortly before the concert. Notice it has bumperettes that match the body which was stock on early cruisers.

Amazing how most Cruisers in pictures are nearby people enjoying themselves in different ways!!!

Who needs a fancy shop with a lift!
How many other vehicles can you pull body off frame with a pulley and a tree limb. They look like this was just an idea they had one afternoon!

“ bring some beer, we’re taking the body off the 40 today”!

My frame had serious rust problems, we were replacing it with one from the parts truck.

Back story- April 1985, this is the 71 that I got for the (ex) wife in 1984. She was alone, and it was assumed she passed out drunk on the beach highway in High Island, Texas. I was 4 wheeling with coworkers in Spring. When I got home I got a call from the ER. The truck went off the road into the sand and flipped end over end 3 times and back onto the road. We found its tracks in the sand. The battery was almost in the surf. She said she was sober. There were Busch cans everywhere. She spent 3 nights in the ICU in Galveston, she had some internal bleeding and bruising. She always refused to wear a seatbelt, that probably saved her. The truck was found upside down on the highway. I bought it back from the insurance company and sold it to her brother. He was driving it about 3 weeks later. I put up with her horse s*** for one more year then divorced her. The BIL drove it maybe another 5 years then totaled it in downtown Houston.

So they used some pulleys attached to a tree to hoist the body off the frame. The 80s, when men were men. :)

In fall 1975 I slide off the road sideways and put my 68 on it's side. Was able to drive for about a year before buying a hard top off a 73. In 1983 bought some 79 doors. It was then I noticed the B pillar on the passenger side was bend in. On a hunting trip I used a come along attached to a Ponderosa Pine to straighten it out. Work like a charm. Only problem was the paint chipped around the gas fill.

The so-called "purists" and BaT crowd are clutching their pearls... F'em. The story is the best part but that gets lost in the period-correct, parts weenie BS. Patch'er up and keep the good times rolling. /rant
