I read some thread that talked about using a 5 speed out of a 80's fj60 in a 40.
questions
1 will this work
2 what year/s fj60 are donors
3 any thing special i need other than pbrake, xmember, d shafts
will be going in a 79 fj40
yes i checked tech most of the h55f threads are dead
Give them a bit to come back online. They are a treasure trove of information. I used them to put an H55 into a 69FJ40. There are still a few dark areas in the info provided. I hopefully will add an article later this year.
that's tru bad religion,
the hj60 has got the 2H engine with the proper spline stuff, the bj40/70 whatevers you have to get an adapter b/c of the 4cyl diesel rather than the 6.
also, i hear ya on the v8 question. wouldn't it be mucho easier to go with some gm 5spd? nv4500 style perhaps?
I think what Landpimp was getting at is that there seems to be a concensus over on the Pirate Board that the NV4500 is a better candidate, durability wise, for the V-8s.
Since you are already running a SBC the nv4500 is going to be easier to source and likely cheaper.
NEW H55Fs are available from Toyota for about $2K.
The SBC to 4sp adapter will also work with the h55(same pattern) Only issues are the H55 is a few inches longer than the 4sp. If you have a gas tank under the body the use of the H55 requires relocation of the tank. Most Ive seen remove the factory tank and use the long range axillary tank mounted behind the rear axle plumbed for use as the primary.
I THINK that with a SBC and the AA adapter you can still use the factory tank because the driveline shifts forward with that type adapter. The Marks adapter doesnt move the driveline and as such also has issues with the factory fuel tank.
I am currently installing an H55 into an 83 FJ40 with the 2F so I have been doing my homework.
are there any other options than to use the toyota split transfer case. if not do you know the toyota pn for the transfer case i need for the 33030-60450 transmission. btw my dealer said aprox 1600 for a new h55. i would like to be able to say all toyota except the sbc
