this day in 1978, production in Germany ceased entirely when the last German-made Beetle trundled out of VW's factory in Emden. However, the retro car continued its life in the emerging markets.

Levi’s Brings Back Albert Einstein’s Iconic Leather Jacket
Back in the 1930s, Albert Einstein purchased a Levi’s Menlo Cossack leather jacket, a signature piece he would wear for decades.

Levi’s Brings Back Albert Einstein’s Iconic Leather Jacket

A photo by Lotte Jacobi of Einstein wearing the leather jacket in question was sold at a Christie’s auction in 2000.

Levi’s wins auction for Einstein’s leather jacket with $147,000 bid

"“We are slaves of millions of things,” Infeld continued, adding:
“Einstein tried to reduce them to the absolute minimum. Long hair minimized the need for the barber.
Socks can be done without. One leather jacket solves the coat problems for many years."
Great guy :)

Peter,

It appears the 500 copies of that jacket are all sold--at $1200 apiece--a total of $600,000.
So it looks like Levi's made something of a profit on their winning bid.

BTW, the scalpers are already circling and jacking-up their resales efforts.

Methinks it would be far cheaper to copy Einstein's "look" by a lack of socks !

This limited-edition of 500 pieces was an inexpensive advertising for Levi Strauss & Co.
