I think I'd go with a minimum of 3/16". It's a small piece so should be easy to work with. And depending on how you drive you should be able to avoid having an obstacle that far in from the door sills.

What kind of steel do I ask for? Or will there be a small sheet at Home Depot?
It'll be just your regular Mild steel. I don't think Home Depot will have sheets that thick. Check out Metal Mart in Rancho Cordova. It's my go-to place and they also have a bunch of random hardware, brackets, mounts, etc. They also sell lots of smaller scrap and cutoffs by the pound, great way to find stuff for small projects and save money by not having to buy full sections.

Cardboard came to life today. They accidentally gave me 1/4" plate, and I sure as hell didn't know the difference off hand. I do now though

That depends on how much weight that piece will be supporting, how much of a beating it will take and weld penetration/quality. If it’s an air tank bracket, I’d say that what you posted in the photo should work.

Successful in making the holes in the mount today and mocking up placement for the tank.
Welded the tank to the mount. This allows the bottom to stay flush, no exposed bolt heads.... It was hard to weld with the tank ends in the way and fitting the gun, but it worked out. Barely.

Installed fittings on the tank and bolted it in its final resting place. Everything lines up perfectly and I could not be more proud and excited! My first metal design and fabrication came to life:

Fixed and redesigned the EVAP canister system to replace the defective one. Gained some underhood space in the process...
Under the hood, the vapor supply line will just go straight to the purge valve now. It will not alter anything permanently and can always be reversed if I wanted.

nice work @TYM4FUN. That's funny, I'm currently looking at going down the same path. Wish I would have seen this first but placed an order right before I checked out for a few weeks and hit the hills. Making room and possible a retro to LT1 was my thought. Interested to see how this goes for you. I'm a bit out yet and still have to look for some space underneath(bit larger than I expected). Had this sitting on the porch when I got back.

Some benefits. Larger vapor holding capacity, and easily available if a replacement is needed. Made in the USA too. The function stays the same. Ford has a version that is a long slim cylinder and would fit nicely, but....Ford. I couldn't do it lol. Plus this design allows all the ports to point where I wanted them, streamlining the hose routing.
Last detail needed is to add a filter at the vent to atmosphere. I am going to look at GM's that fits the port, or just make one. Haven't decided.
I was a bit worried about fuel spilling into it from the tank on off camber situations off-road but ordered the cheap check valve that is in the 80 tank to confirm one is in there. Wasn't much info out on this. I also thought about just using the existing canister vent dump into the frame but also thought about a filter if there was a cheap solution out there.
